A start, a restart, and a restart, and...

Got some 2" box and cut to length to fit the rear mounts...

After a quick test fit, the box section fouls the inner seat belt mounting, so another cut was in order...

Still not all the way down on the box at the rear, so first to remove this...

Then remove about half of this...

Now it sits low enough in the back, so looking at the front I was able to use the outermost stock bolt hole and drill one new hole for the inner front bolt. Did that and chucked it in for a test sit...

After sitting in it for a bit, the left-to-right is okay, but it's a little too far forward (currently adjusted all the way back) and a little too high in the front.

The solution I came up with was this. The front brackets bolt on, so I took them off and tweaked them a bit to bolt on about 3/4" farther forward, then moved the seat back and down to where the seat brackets attach to the rear of the rail instead of the front.

This gets me just over 1" further back and about 3/4" lower down in the front. Withholding judgement until I can have a fully bolted down test sit, but I think we can live with that...

Second two I knew about, and surprised to learn Bonvo's has been going that long...    ^_^

First two were new to me, but I will check them out...

Do the trays fit?  Somehow, those seats (with the leather) look to be a bit larger than the vinyl ones I had. Perhaps overstuffed maybe?

I still have a pair of black Miata seats up in my garage rafters I need to find a new home for...

Both of the first 2 are good, but greiggys is one of the best builds on this forum IMHO. :)

People say go with earlier Miata seats. On the other unmentionable forum

I thought about that, especially due to the headrest speakers, but finding decent used ones proved impossible. I also looked at replacement upholstery to recover some 1G seats, but that was looking like at least $400-500 all in. These were only $130 for the pair, so I thought it would be worth a shot...

Fair enough. I am currently working on seats for my B120 build and its very aggrevating. They are proving too small and I might have to consider another set of seats yet again.

If Miata seats are tight in the B110 i don't think they would fit a B120 although others have said they are good in the B120.

Good point. How do you mount those in a 1200 though? Looks like the tech info says to bolt through the floor and you would have to probably cut out all the factory risers

Mine was bolted to the factory slider. But to the floor would be a lot lower.

Were it mine, floor. But I'm 6' 3" so the utes aren't really built for me...   ^_^

So I attempted to first make the stripe on the rear door panels shiny again with some of this super thin aluminum tape...

It looked terrible.

So I peeled that off and decide paint was the way to go...

large.20180127_100814.jpg.05d7b3d9a1bb25

While not perfect, that worked a lot better...

Got both sides done and reinstalled, so I decided to go ahead and throw the seat in there to see how it looks...

I wanted to see how much "leg room" there was with the front seat installed in my preferred position...

large.20180127_125843.jpg.ccda5722c3672d

And it ain't much...

i never had any intention of anyone sitting in the back seat anyway, but there can be no doubt now. It's more of a parcel shelf than a seat...

I sat in my coupe backseat once and pulled both seats back to see how much legroom there was.....so little room that in fact I had to call my nephew to come rescue me from the backseat because I couldn't reach the seat sliders on my aftermarket seats.

I can see the Bring a Trailer ad now:

"If you can stand the smell, this is the Datsun for you.  And you may keep the skeleton."

Although you probably can't tell, this is about 1" lower and about 1" father back...

large.20180203_114524.jpg.ffbc12a11945d8

I ended up trimming the front brackets so they would sit lower, then mounted them to the back side of the seat rail. Still really solid, but lower and father back.

Because of that, I got some 1" box and remade my rear spacer...

large.20180203_105737.jpg.3c5bf20af0d9ef

Then put that in for a test sit...

large.20180203_120802.jpg.bae3c716e68acb

I think this is the final spot. It's low enough, and far enough back, to be comfortable. I have about 2" between my head and the headliner, so I think we're good...

While I was sitting there, I decided to see how the 6pt harness fit, and immediately noticed a problem with it. Since the old seat had a hole in the middle for the sub strap to go up through, and this seat does not, it is now too low. The camlock hits me right in the testicles. Which is waaaay too low. So I stretched it out and marked where it sat...

large.20180203_120145.jpg.e92cf0b959e016

They were bolted down with the stock seat belt bolts, but since they were adjusted all the way out already, I had to change that. I unbolted them and put some fresh holes in the floor under the seat, then adjusted them up to get the camlock about 4" higher...

large.20180203_132004.jpg.eed8fdf31096ca

That should be much better, but there's now a lot of adjustment leftover if it needs to go higher...

After that I cleaned up and repainted the seat rail since I scratched the hell out of it doing all this mockup.

Next week I will be dyeing the seat and reinstalling it (hopefully) for the last time...

  • 2 weeks later...

Weather was too damn cold to dye the seats so I got on to some other things that needed doing...

Was head scratching on how to get speaker wires from the front to the back since the PO had already installed new carpet but had glued it down. I found a spot where he had spliced two pieces together on the side of the transmission tunnel, so I pulled that up, hid the wires under it and glued it back down.

We looked at a few different options for mounting the rear speakers but none of them seemed ideal, so for now I have taken what Tim calls the "ghetto" approach and just did this...

large.20180210_113933.jpg.1e5b3a6a81b095

I think the right side will stay still due to the harness holding it in place, but the left side would be free to move around. After looking at way to fix that I came up with two options. Either a tether from the back of the box to the floor behind the seat, or attaching it to the other speaker box to limit movement.

I found this in the parts bin...

large.20180210_114907.jpg.2b80b98a02778c

So thinking I will use that (probably also doubled up with a piece of steel) as a bar between the boxes to keep them from moving about the seat...
