Not gonna lie. A love of old school Italian cars may have been partially responsible for the move...    ^_^

Was just checking in on your progress, read ^^this^^ and had to chime in... Mine :)

John, the car looks great and nice work!

XMAS test drive in the cards?

Sadly, no. But it won't be long I think. Maybe another month or so, assuming everything in the dash works as designed.  ^_^

That's awesome! One of these is still on my short list of "someday" projects...

Ran the wiring for the fuel pump inside the rear cover panel, then drilled a hole in the battery box to mount the relay to. Looks nice and clean with the lid on...

After thinking on it a bit, I need to add an inline fuse to the wire powering the relay. And when I do that, I might flip the relay and bolt it to the inside of the box instead. We shall see...

Oh, yeah!  Do that!  There was something bothering me about this installation while grokking it in person, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.  Yes, inside the box will be much better aesthetically... of course if the battery outgasses hydrogen into the box and the relay ignites it, we could have an issue.  Maybe we should leave it outside the box after all.

Headlight switch came in today...

As did the tires...

The tire dealer I was talking to in England about the sporty Yokohamas in a 185/50-14 had these in the same size but a cheaper brand. He said people seem to like them, so for half the price I thought I'd give them a try.

Worst-case scenario, I can buy the Yokes next. Since I am planning to absolutely shred the first set of tires this car gets...

Worked on moving that relay today and got tired of the creaky trunk sound every 1200 seems to make. Decided to sort out why it creaks...

The trunk spring rides on the trunk hinge via a little plastic bushing that keeps it from making noise. The plastic bushing on one side was worn out, and busted in half on the other side.

Worn bushing...

Got those off, cut a one inch long piece of 1/4" fuel line, slipped that on...

Now the creak is gone.

About 1/8" taller, but 1" wider...

This time instead of painting the letters on, I got some from tirestickers.com

large.20170114_104529.jpg.d43fcc0b3e7e66

To make the letters stick better, I started the tedious process of removing all the little nipples on the sidewall...

Then started reading the instructions and saw this...

Yeah, it's 39 degrees in the shop, so those are going to wait a few weeks...

Looking for something else to do, I remembered that awhile back I bought a new ignition switch. See, somewhere in the move from the last shop to this one, we lost the keys to this car. Since I replaced the door locks with Solex locks anyway, we only need the original key for the ignition switch anyway...

Old switch out...

New switch in...

That's much better. So buttery smooth...

What we were doing for an ignition key up until now was using a random Datsun key that sort of fit. It was good enough to test things with, but was so notchy and inconsistent it had to go...   ^_^

Y'know we have a heat gun at the shop, right?

Yes, but the problem is you are told to hold pressure on the letters for 40-50 seconds with your hands while the glue dries. This will be difficult if you have heated them up beforehand. And make it seemingly impossible to heat them up while the glue is drying.

It may be a moot point. The first one turned out so bad, and pissed me off so much, I ripped them off and just had the tire flipped at a tire shop.

I may readdress this when the weather warms up, or I may just never do it.

I may also go back to stencils and spray paint because racecar...

  • 1 month later...

Started this thread nine years ago today, at this exact moment.

That means I'm crowding ten years of owning this car, and I've still never driven it...       :crying:

And here's the "after"...
