The Nissan engineers designed it to work this way... and it does. Why mess with it? Vacuum advance comes from a port on the side of the Hitachi carburetor. The opening inside is just above the throttle plate so at idle when the plate is closed there is no vacuum signal to the distributor. As you step on the gas the throttle plate lifts above the port an it is exposed to intake vacuum and the distributor advances.

Okay, so i do understand it correctly. Follow up question. I seem to have a small amount of vacuum coming from the carb port at idle. Is this normal, I would assume there shouldn't be any vacuum at all. I'll try to getcs picture of the port this afternoon, there are three on the side of my carb. This is the furthest left and the highest port. This should be correct, right?
