With 3.54 gears you won't be able to haul anything. And even the empty pickup will be slow to get moving. 3.9 would be more appropriate, you can do 70mph with 3.9 gears and still accelerate a bit.

Stock 520 is 39:8 gearset (4.875). 521 pickup with L16 was 35:8 (5.375). The 35:8 gearset would be good if you plan to haul any weight.

Maybe I am missing something, but my wagon has the 3.89 gears or whatever was stock. It is mildly slower off the line than my friends 521, but his truck peters out around 50-55 and I keep going to 80-90mph. And its not like the 521 weighs alot more. I have no problem keeping up in traffic.

He more than likely has a J13 engine while you have at the very least a L16, and while yours might be stock, his likely is stock. Going from 488 gears to 389 gears is like scrapping first gear altogether, if he has the engine/torque to start out in second as a DD, fine, but I doubt it. I have 389 gears in my NL320 with a E1 engine, but I am likely moving a lot less weight, and will never haul any weight.

No, he has a L16. he has the "better" exhaust manifold and a Matchbox. We both have webers and the 210 head. I have driven my wagon packed to the gills.

He can easily do a burnout with the stock L16.

I am talking about the guy(Larry Johnson) that started this thread, his truck likely has a J13, or is that who your talking about, and he has a L16 in his 67 datsun 520 truck.
