Larry johnson
The gearing on my buddy's '67 520 is really low. Does anyone know of a compatible ring and pinion to gain some freeway legs? Quote Link to comment

Larry johnson
And this daddy will bolt right in? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
With 3.54 gears you won't be able to haul anything. And even the empty pickup will be slow to get moving. 3.9 would be more appropriate, you can do 70mph with 3.9 gears and still accelerate a bit. Stock 520 is 39:8 gearset (4.875). 521 pickup with L16 was 35:8 (5.375). The 35:8 gearset would be good if you plan to haul any weight. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Most 2wd 720s are 3.70-3.90 range. Look on the inner fender on the pass side below the hood hinge. Thre is a smal aluminum tag listing the trans/axle.. look over in the bottom right side it will say HF38 for a 3.889 or HF37 for a 3.7 Quote Link to comment
Larry johnson
I have a an '89 F250 460ci for hauling. Just would like to commute the eight miles to work with fewer revs. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Anything less than 4.38 with the stock J13 is not going to get out of its own way, even empty. I have 4.38s in my '68, it does 70 no problem. Of course I also have a J15 that produces a tad bit more torque, but the gearing is still better than the 4.88s that it had originally. wayno
Going from 488 gears to 390 gear is quite a jump, ggzilla had a typo in his post, he meant 4.375 gears, not 5.375 gears. I would go with 437s or 411s at the most, but that is my opinion. I beleave that the 437s will bolt right in, and so will the 411s depending on where they came from. Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
Maybe I am missing something, but my wagon has the 3.89 gears or whatever was stock. It is mildly slower off the line than my friends 521, but his truck peters out around 50-55 and I keep going to 80-90mph. And its not like the 521 weighs alot more. I have no problem keeping up in traffic. Quote Link to comment

Going from 488 gears to 389 gears is like scrapping first gear altogether, if he has the engine/torque to start out in second as a DD, fine, but I doubt it. I have 389 gears in my NL320 with a E1 engine, but I am likely moving a lot less weight, and will never haul any weight. Quote Link to comment

We both have webers and the 210 head. I have driven my wagon packed to the gills. He can easily do a burnout with the stock L16. Quote Link to comment

I am talking about the guy(Larry Johnson) that started this thread, his truck likely has a J13, or is that who your talking about, and he has a L16 in his 67 datsun 520 truck. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Laecon, your buddy's L16 isn't running right -- or he doesn't know how to drive it. Run it right up to 6000 RPM it should not "peter out", if it does something is out of whack with the engine. With the J13 pickup it should rev up to 5000 no problem, unless it needs a tune-up.
