New owner of a 1981 720 4x4

Hey all,

 

This is my 3rd datsun(4th if you count the D22) and hope to find a 620 cab to put on it(although I may fix the stock one and run with it)

I have a SD22 that I want to put in it but it looks like it will need a new/modified oil pan to clear the 4x4 front diff.

has 30X9.5R15 tires on it and thinking about putting my Frontier wheels/tires on it and putting new wheels/tires on the Frontier.

I think the 720 might be taller if it didn't have a flat RF tire.

 

The Z22S motor turns over but only fires on 1 or 2 cylinders.... not really sure what is wrong with it. previous owner said it needed a head gasket but he never ran the truck so who knows? Has had at least 6 owners. LOL

I know the diesel is slow, but I don't need lots of power. Want to be able to take up to the mountains and have some fun and drive at 55mph to and from work and be reliable.

Not going to build a motor for this thing.

If I have to really drive somewhere, my Frontier has the "ULTIMATE 510 SWAP ENGINE" aka VG33 and it gets the job done any day of the week.

Nice score. hope you are happy with it. I notice on yours too the cab is lower than the bed like all of them do this. Like both 2by 720s i have had seems the right torsion bar is a;ways weaker.

Box and cab should line up....either the cab mounts are compromised...or the box has been raised

the box doesnt belong to that truck, look at the tail lights theyre on the side the bed is from a 85-86 720. its prolly been raised for clearence issues like the tank or sumthin..

also look at the gap between the cab and the bed, the cab is a tad bit shorter since its a 81.

Nice 4x4. If you decide to ditch those wheels, let me know. Been looking for some factory steelies for my 4x4.

Ok i should of saw the domestic bed side instead of the hooks and the outer fold of the bed. On my 3rd 720. Sorry yall

floor boards are gone and the body mounts went through the floor.

I pulled the Engine and transmission this morning after about 45 minutes of pressure washing. It turns out that the engine is actually a Z24.

Then I rolled the truck back out and pressure washed the engine bay for about another 20 minutes and realized how "easy" it would be to take the cab off since only 2 bolts were holding it on(the two up by the radiator)

 

Here are some pictures from today:

On the RF is the spare tire from my D22, I really like the stock steel wheels though.

Obviously someone swapped out the Z22.

I do notice the 'block' has a Z22 oil pan on it....to clear the 81 front diff

Well first off was the distance between the top bolt holes on the front cover. I was like hmmmm..... thats further apart than they are on an L20B.....

 

Then I looked at the block when I had it out for the Z24 stamping.

Assuming the head has a black metal valve cover..?....whereas the Z22 is aluminum

Although...they can be switched

Z22 is also stamped 6W...Z24-10W

Are you on the north side of atlanta neat cumming? Or did you get the truck from near there? Think I saw the truck on craigslist earlier.

a few days ago saw a 720 4x4 on craigslist in carrollton for 800-1000 (don't remember for sure) that did look ok with starter and idle issues. Is a lot closer to me. But seemed when looking for my truck most of the better deals were on the north side of atlanta. I ended up getting one out of the barter section from a man in franklin ga just south of me. I now have about 450 bucks in my truck and the biggest thing it needs is cv shafts in the front but in 2 by it runs and drives good. Good luck again with your truck.

Got the bed off this morning and started cleaning up the frame rails... spent 13 hours today grinding and cutting off bed mounts.

 

 

Had 2 gallons of high gloss red paint donated to my cause, and 2 gallons of high gloss black as well as epoxy primer and all the other stuff I'll need to paint this thing.

No real progress today on the truck...

 

Did go to the parts store and ordered an SD22 intake/exhaust gasket, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, and 5 rear chunk gaskets(good to have a couple of them around) and they will be in Thursday. Gonna freshen up the motor a little bit and give it a paint job.
