I finally had a chance to work on my 710 this weekend!

My car's rear-view mirror was disintegrating,

...but I checked around a junkyard and it looked like a mirror from most 80's-90's Nissans would fit onto the car without modifications. I picked one from an Altima which had a light-grey color that matched my car pretty well:

...With a day/night switch!

I also added a hard start relay since my car's starter was very intermittent. There are a lot of wiring diagrams for these online, but it was confusing since it looks like different manufacturers use different wire colors. It's best if you just go by the numbers on the relay

86 -> ground

85 -> disconnect the wire that connects to the snap-on connector on the solenoid, and connect this to 85

87 -> connect to the snap-on connector on the solenoid

30 -> connect to the solenoid at the same point where the heavy battery cable is connected.

I found this bundle of resistors in the wire that leads from the coil to my tach - does anyone know why this was done?

I checked under the kick panels, and there was space for 4" speakers. The panels are made out of something that looks like fiberglass crossed with flimsy carpet padding, but they seem to be barely strong enough to hold speakers.

I found this weird lighter in a junkyard 280Z - it has a hole in the middle - I guess so you can light your cigarette without the bother of removing the lighter from the dashboard.

Nope - I drove from Brooklyn to Syracuse on Friday - the picture of the car in Sacramento is still the prettiest picture I have of the car.

so you went back to the place you bought the car?

:D

The 720s, S110 and ZX also use a 2.2K ohn resistor in line between the coil neg and the tach.

cool, but a Red-Red-Red resistor all by itself is 2.2KoHm, or 2200oHm.

This is 5 in parallel. This means the effective resistance of that group of resistors is 440oHm...

I drove to Philadelphia this weekend, but my charging system gave out on the return trip... and then AAA wouldn't tow me home until the next morning. ...15 hours to get from Philadelphia to Brooklyn! If anyone can recommend a good source of troubleshooting for a charging system, I'd be much obliged.

Luckily, there was a good photographer along for the ride.

I was working on my car yesterday in Brooklyn, and a guy tells pulls up and tells me that he has a car like mine, only a 4-door... I figure that he actually has a 510 or a b210, but he whips out some photos from his glove compartment, and, sure enough he has an early-style fastback 710 sedan. I gave him a piece of paper with this site's address written on it - hopefully he'll stop by. It's so nice to know that there are more 710's this far east! I also spotted a 620 in my neighborhood.

Both the 710 and 620 are sporting combination primer grey/gloss black paint schemes.

I'm still trying to figure out the ignition/charging system on my car. When I turn the key lately nothing happens (no dash lights, nothing at all,) but the dome light comes on when I open the door and the battery still reads as having power (it says 17.89 volts on my multimeter actually.)

Does anyone know how to test for a dead ignition switch? Or how to hotwire a 710?

Or how to hotwire a 710?

Hotwiring a 710 is easy:

1) Confirm you get power to the distributor with the ignition ON, Got volts? this will eliminate one wire needed...

2) Confirm you get power to the postive (+) side of your coil with the ignition ON AND make sure you are also getting power to the positive side (+) of your coil with the car in START...The voltage difference will be evident. I use my long cords for the multimeter and have it sit where I can see it while in the drivers seat...Just ground the Black to a good known ground and alligator clip the red wire to the positive terminal of the coil. Got volts? One less wire needed...

3) Confirm you are getting voltage to the solenoid wire (the spade connector) on the top of the starter. This is where many find adding a "hot start" relay (I have to...) in line so that you are getting 12 volts to the solenoid. If you are getting less than 9 volts to the solenoid, you will continue to fight that poor car until you get a solid 12 volts down there...

I am wondering...Have you checked the fuses? Fusible link? I know of a 710 that had an alternator give up the ghost and it self-destructed the fusible link, rendering the car a paperweight. The fuses may **appear** fine, but rotate them in their sockets to ensure a good fit and try again before pulling your hair out first. could be something very simple...

Thanks for the info!

The previous owner changed out the fusible links for maxi fuses, and the owner before him added some relays when the automatic transmission was swapped out for a 5-speed and installed a Petronix ignition system. ... so now the electrical system is screwy.

I'll run through the fuses and your troubleshooting list tonight. Hopefully I can figure out what is the cause of my troubles.

I went to move my car for street cleaning and it fired right up. ...found a parking place and it konked out again while I was parking. At the same time as the rain started.

At least the weatherstripping finally arrived in the mail!

I got around to installing a windshield washer bottle yesterday.

Mine was cracked, so I found a universal replacement on ebay. The mounting bracket was different, so I just cut the mount from my old bottle to use as a bracket on the new bottle.

It works okay, but I should have cut it slightly wider, since the bracket squishes a little when it is clicked into the metal mount on the car's inner fender.

I finally had a day off today. Thanks Rosh Hashahna!

The previous owner installed an IR Saturn alternator, but it konked out so I installed a new regulator and stock alternator that I picked up on ebay. I also had the time to fix the broken clip in my fusebox (for the "Common" fuse.)

...and the new washer bottle seemed ready to pop off of its mount, so I found a 240Z one on ebay. The electric pump was shot so I swapped one from the new washer bottle, though I had to pop open the pump and reverse some parts so that the various inlets and outlets and power socket would be in the right place.

Yep! Two people have left notes under my windshield wiper offering to buy the car, and three people who passed by while I was working on the car today asked if I would sell it. I park the car near a garage, and the garage owner told me that people have stopped by to ask him if the car is for sale. Jeez!!

I'm driving to Syracuse tomorrow morning, and it will be nice to go for a drive without the ghostly glow of the alternator light. Plus I'll finally get a chance to solder my rear defroster back together. I live in a 4th-floor walkup, so I can't get to the car with an extension cord!
