Standards tend to be a single cover over the entire front of the bellhousing with only a hole for the crank to pass through. It fits between the flywheel and the block and if missing, the starter, which is bolted to the tranny, will be that much further to the front of the vehicle and away from the starter ring teeth. Automatics have the bottom 1/3, about even with the pan gasket, removable so you can get at the torque converter bolts.

 

L series and Z series engine plates for standards. Can you see the difference?

The hole for the starter is much closer to the block on the L series.
