Thats a good idea, would 223's go there as well though?

Wish I could find this one. A friend (Paul - 71-521 here and on NWDE) got it through me, but then he died of cancer very suddenly. :(

Haven't been able to track it down to see if it going to get worked on. I would take it in a heartbeat now.

I might have posted about this a year or so back. Here's my Pl 222 that is now my daily driver! Sure it leaks and spits and sputters now and then but it gets me there and gets better then it's rated 30 miles a gallon. I've welded up the rocker panels, had the brakes re lined. tinkered with the carb and put spring overloads on the back and gas shocks on the front. I checked the clutch and put on a newer model slave but she's pretty much all factory. I would not sell it for less then $6,500.00 :)

I saw this truck at Pauls house in person before he passed away. Maybe I'll drive by his house and see if it's still there. One of his sons did sign up to ratsun many moons ago. I'm thinking they hung on to most of his Datsun stuff.

The engine in my red 521 that I drive everyday I bought from paul but didn't get in my truck until after he passed. I only knew him for a short time but his passing shook my up pretty bad.

Me too, he was a good guy with a nice family and young.   :(

An update would be cool if you do swing by there :)

Concerning the "newer model slave" -- do you have the part number or application information. I believe mine needs one as well.

What I did was a search on ebay and could only find 1 chinese knock off. They wanted $187.00 for the dang thing but I'm not paying that. You might still find it there but You have to do a wide search for "datsun slave cylider" and look at a million pictures. I bought a slave for I believe a 97 nisson and the holes are not spaced far enough apart so you have to cut out the end of the holes and turn them into slots. I then bent some 3/8" flat washers to keep the cylinder centered. I used the stock rod out of my 60 and it works perfect for around $27.00! I'll post a picture. ;)

Take it to the September 2014 JCCS at the Queen Mary!  The last few years several avid Japanese Nationals have been attending and making firm cash bids on the cars that they remember from their youth or that their parents drove.  You just might strike the fancy of someone with deep pockets!

Good info. I had not seen this post before. I did post pics of my plg222 a couple years ago and suggested a forum for the pre-320 trucks.

I had stated in my post at the time that I wasn't going to touch my truck until I built a garage to put it in. 1 1/2 years later, I have the garage done (no slab yet though).

Last night I put a battery in it and dumped some gas in the carb and it started immediately and ran very smoothly.

Awesome considering it has sat for 20 years, 5 of which have been in my yard.

I am also investigating 320 parts that will fit like masters, slaves, etc. Last night I was going to order wheel cylinder kits for 320 from rockauto and hope they work.

By the way, I can't seem to get the drums off and I dont see a set screw like some of them had.

Also, fyi, there where about 50 of the 221's sold in the u.s. (first year) and 252 of the 222's sold in 60.

Any help with compatibility would be appreciated

Another note: someone had stuck a j motor in mine. I do have an E1 in one of my 320's which would be closer to the original E that it came with. And I also have a 223 with an E1 that apparently runs as well but I haven't tried it yet.

Scifiguy30,

It looks like your truck is a 221 model with the round front marker lights and 221 hubcaps.

But maybe these lights were on export 220s

Do you have a picture of the VIN tag?

If so, please post it.

The 220 was a 1958 model but there are many examples of a different year stamped on the vin tags.

Always interesting to learn about these early Trucks.

Thanks,

Ted

THANKS,

As a local truck brother would say "VERY interesting"

The bottom line "CAR NO" is the real identifier.

It is hard to read at the angle but it looks like "LG221-9 and that should match the vin # stamped on the frame.

LG221 is the model and "9" is the year of production BUT somehow LG220 was stamped on the top "type" line..

The "model for year" is stamped 1959 and matches the 9 in the "car no".

The remainder of the "car no" is a sequential production #. with the first digit being a sub type code if needed.

For example a NL320 will have a "6" as the first digit. I can not make out what it is in the picture.

Sometimes there is a letter stamped after the digits. We have not determined what it signifies.

I do not see one on your tag.

SO

Looks like you have a 1959 221 truck. It is in very nice condition.

Also, what is the engine #?. It looks like a only 2 digits at the end!. An amazingly early "C" motor.?

Does the truck have the original motor with that #?

BTY, I have a NOS front bumper guard that might fit. I can not identify it but it looks the same.

If you need it send me a variety of measurements that I can compare to mine.

Sorry about the low res pic, the numbers are:

Engine # C 55099 and, yes, the truck has the original numbers matching C series engine which runs very well

Car # LG221-9-137316

You will soon be able to see lots of high resolution pictures of this truck on bringatrailer.com as they will be auctioning it off soon. Perhaps the new owner would be interested in buying your bumper guard, thanks very much for the offer.
