DatsunDaves New Start/Stop Button Ignition System

Recommended Posts

OK, so Those of you who know me, know I like to try and come up with something New into something old. I've noticed a lot of people trying to come up with a Push Button Start for their S30's, 510's, 620's and other Datsuns. The others want to use the Newer Maxima / Altima Start/Stop button. The problem has been that they still have to use the key to turn on the ignition, Cut up the wiring, Drill holes or have to make specialty brackets, etc, etc and sometimes with bad results. Such as wire fires, car won't start, electrical issues, starter won't shut off, and on and on it goes.

So after researching every ones issues with the typical DIY installs, I called a friend and we designed a unit that does what it's supposed to do. This kit uses the Nissan Maxima Start/Stop Button, All functions of the button were retained (Lock, Acc, On and center button LED's work like normal) PLUGS INTO THE DATSUN IGNITION CONNECTOR!! External relays that are easily reached and replaceable if needed, A Start circuit box that is simple to install and only requires 1) connection from the button switch, 1) connection from the relay pack and ONLY 3) wires of the 6 wires need to be connected for full operation. The remaining 3 wires are optional, as is the Plug in Security Switch, which is very small and easily hidden within 3 Ft of the box.

We've decided, after adding the price of all the parts, assembly, shipping and such, and Trying to keep it Very Competetive with other similar products and prices, The $170 w/ shipping included in the price, anywhere in the lower 48 States, was a more than fair price. For a "Plug and Play" unit, Made for the 240Z but compatible with MANY other vehicles, $170 is a Great price.

The Nissan Push to start/Stop button will go where your Keyed ignition presently resides. The hole only needs to be widened about 1/16" and 2 slots be dremeled into the shell to lock it in the correct angle. (so the button doesn't twist in the hole) The Ignition switch Will Obviously need to be removed and the owner will not have a Locking steering column afterwards.

Some of you will raise the concern of Security with a system like this. Totally understandable and is dealt with in a couple ways. If you already have an Aftermarket security system (Car Alarm) Almost all of them have a starter kill wire called a "Ground Output when Armed" and it is typically Orange in color. When the aftermarket alarm is "Armed" the Orange wire will have a Negative Ground output, which when connected to the Orange "Disengage" wire of the Start box, will stop all functions of the switch and circuitry.

The other Security Option is a Simple Plug-In Micro switch. It plugs right into the Start box, has 3 feet of wire and is easily hidden within reach of the owner. It can be mounted in the center console, dash mounted, hidden in plain sight among other switches.

So in conclusion. You can instal a Nissan Maxima Start/stop Ignition button into your S30 or other Datsuns. It will operate very similar to the Maxima. There are Security options. Only a few connections and a minimum of 3 wires to connect. The switch installs with minimal effort where your existing keyed ignition switch is. No more forgetting your keys in the ignition. Just unlock the door, put your keys back in your pocket.

After more research, I have found only a few similar products. They are Complicated, Not made specifically for your S30, Way more expensive and include a manual that tells you to ONLY have a Certified Automotive 12 volt Specialist instal their product into your car. If you know how to use a Dremel, know where the brake pedal switch is and how to follow a wire from the distributor to the coil's Positive terminal, connect a wire to it and run it in thru the firewall to the steering column area and plug in matching connectors, Then you can do this in less than an afternoon.

Below are some pictures and a video of the first run. The operations have been changed to more resemble the Maxima operation.

press once to turn on the Acc.

press again and it shuts back off.

OR

Press once to turn on Acc.

Press and hold the brake pedal then press and hold the Start button until the car starts.

Press the button again to shut the car off. leave the car.

Car will not start unless the brake pedal is being pressed while pressing the button. if the pedal is not pressed the pressing of the button will only shut the Acc back off.

I'll answer what ever questions you have.

I tried, I REALY did!! My computer or the site kept kickin me off then it wouldn't allow ANY of the pictures I tried to post. I can't even get a profile pic or an Avatar to load up. Maybe a sidenote or PM from you could help me figure it out. It says "Upload Failed, Contact Administator" And the pics are only 150x112

Thanks for the kinda Welcome LOL Yup, you're right It's me. You probably remember my 70' Red 240Z and I brought the Green 72' 240Z last year as well (had a friend drive it) Been into Datsuns for about 20 years now.

As for will it Look good and fit, as well as work in a 90' 240SX....? As long as you have enough room for a 1.76" Diameter circle ( The Chrome trim peice) and at least 3" of depth behind the hole cut-out, We can make it work. The relay pack only needs Power in, Starter out, Acc. out and Ignition out. Hell, if your connector looks like the one that GGZilla posted, then you're good. We'd just have to double check the Pin lay-out and if it's not in the right order, we can move the pins around. EASY!!

You gonna be at Golden Gardens or Canby this year?

WOWWW dave! I have GOT to get this kit! Too bad it's a bit out of the budget :( I'll assume it's compatible for the 210, correct?

It's only $160 if you pick it up, when I get them finished. The $170 Price-tag is for shipping anywhere in the Lower 48 States.

I'm taking Pre-orders Now but you got at least 3 weeks before The boards come in and I can start putting them together for shipping.

Just let me know.

Will it fit any Datsun with this switch?

20002.jpg

B110 and B310 have this type. B210 has a compatible version.

Thanks for the picture, I'll be pointing to it a lot in the posts to follow.

It should. Like I told Rustina, As long as the connector is the same as the typical 2x3 (2 rows and 3 terminals per row) style 6-pin, it'll plug in, and that looks just like the 240Z switch that it was made to fit (the connector that is) Then just connect the Brake switch wire, Coil wire (the Circuit needs to see an Alternating signal +/-/+/-/+/-/+/-/+ you get the idea. and the ground wire and you're done. And we can always move the wires around on the kit to make the correct wires match with your connector.

Hahahaha! Very cool. A perfect Canby door prize! :hyper:

Will it work on roadsters, too?

Pete

As long as the roadster has the same plug that the other cars have and fits into the Ignition switch pictured above.

And even if it doesn't, I'd love to work with you to find the connector that WILL work. I'm willing to help if you are.

Ahhhhhh, I was thinking Wagon Dave, but you're Dave of Wolf Wire. I bought your prototype roadster headlight wiring hardness at Canby 2009....still not installed because the roadster isn't running. :(

Yeah, we'll have to get together once I have the roadster on the road.

It was a shot in the dark, I remember you. Didn't you actually come out to the house for that Headlight harness? Or did you email me with some measurements? Can't remember. You're friends with Leigh, right?

I did see you at Canby and remember your Roadster. It rained off an on that year. See ya again this year?

By the way, it's White Wolf Wire Works. But you were pretty close.

THAT'S AWESOME!!! Thank You for the Info. I'm gonna have to use that too. Been so damn busy writing instructions, building harnesses and trying to get this off the ground, I just haven't had time to do the cross-referencing on the switches and connectors.

As for the "Similar connectors with wiring, that's easy to fix. I just need to know which wire is which and where on the plug they are.

This is great, thank you Sooo Much, You just answered a lot of other peoples questions with that list.

Your more than welcome for the good invitation Dave, it's great to see you on ratsun finally, their is a thread in the general discussion area about how to post pictures from photobucket, it's super easy and I know a Datsun genius like you can do it.

As soon as I'm ready for interior in may I'll be sending you a email or pm or I'll call you

Thanks again. I wouldn't wait too long. Looks like a lot of interest in the first batch.

OK, Finally got out there and made a video of the new DZ-Ztart module installed in my 70' 240Z. The old video had different functions. It now better resemble the Maxima operation of Push once for Acc, press brake and push to start car, press again to shut off. Press without touching brake pedal and you only get Acc. on and off.

if this link doesn't work, use the one below.

Thanks again guys,

Dave

thats awesome Dave

I worked at Nissan for a while and often wondered about putting the 09-10 push button starts in my dattos.

what all is included in the kit exactly?

and with the pictures if you have them uploaded to a host site like Photobucket, you just select the IMG tags and paste them into your post.

The kit comes with.......

The 09'-10' Nissam Maxima / Altima Push start Button.

The DZ-Start Module (Full circuit board in a black plastic case with 3 connector points and a coil signal verification LED. Lights when you have the correct coil signal

Datsun relay harness that plugs right into your Datsun (as listed above) and plugs into your DZ-Start module. The same connector has the other wires that need to be connected to the brake switch, + connector on the coil and the ground wire. The other 3 wires are optional but not needed for full operation.

Hole cut-out template (heavy card stock.) Place it over the existing igniton switch hole and trace to dremel it out (only about 1/16" bigger hole needed to slide the switch in Or use it to put a hole where ever you want. You will need at least 3" of space behind the hole you cut, to clear the switch and cable..

Zip ties to clean up your wiring when done and hold the relay pack and control Module up under the dash.

Full instructions and DZ-Start diagram. Includes How-to, operation, diagnostics and general info.

Small bag of connectors and T-Taps.

You also have the option of a mounting bracket that can be used under the dash, on the side of the center console (if applicable) or where ever you want it.

For a few dollars more, you can also order a longer switch cable to accommodate further mounting options (comes with 30" cable but you can get up to 6 feet long if you need.

The Nissan Switch already has a 30" cable connected to it and has an RJ45 (Ethernet) connector on the end to plug right into the DZ-Start module

All the quess work has been taken care of. Everything plugs right into your car. You just need to decide where to put the switch (Ignition hole, dash, center console, underdash bracket, etc.

There is an "off", "accessory", and a "running" position, but is there a "key on engine off" position? KOEO comes in handy during troubleshooting sometimes

It does not have the Ignition on engine off setting. BUT........... If you ask while ordering, I can add a micro switch to the relay pack that will allow you to turn on the ignition without starting the car. Just hide the switch up under the dash when not in use. I'll also include instructions for this in the instruction manual.

If you guys are gonna be at Golden Gardens, Please stop by and say hi. Just look for the Orange'ish Red 70' 240Z. Dark tinted window, 16" Eagle Alloys, LED Taillights and front markers with Audi Style LED strips below the headlight buckets.

I'm also gonna try and save a few of this or the next run of DZ-Start Modules and bring them with me to Canby.

I really wanna hook-up with a 510 guy and a 620 guy to have them go over what needs upgrades and and such. Still searching the forums but there's a lot to choose from and would like to narrow it down to the Most needed items. Ya know.

So save your money, and when you buy one, please remember to tell me what site yu're from so I can make sure that site gets it's fare share. I love donating to the ones that help out.

Actually, The first few PrePaying buyers will be the first to receive their kit and instal it. Afterwards, I will Give them a decent "Pay Back Check" for their write-up and comments on the kit. Just be the first few to Prepay via PayPal, instal it, write a summary of what your impressions are of the kit (Ease of instal, function and overall thoughts) and I'll cut you a check. Better the review, better the check.... haha but a good thing either way.

How's that sound?

Yes, you saw me at Canby, but not my roadster as it's been mostly a non-running project since I bought it in 2004.

Yup, planning on it.

Yeah, I have your card. Just didn't feel like typing the entire company name.

That is the shit, nicely done

Now i have to save up.

That's a definite no shitter. Unfortunately, I have to save for 2 switches; roadster and 411.....after they're running and on the road first.
