The speedometer needle is hooked up to an aluminum cup, with a magnet inside it, and the magnet has no physical connection to the cup. Bullet_theory Posted March 5, 2011 Report Share Posted March 5, 2011 replace / repair or buy a gps and use it as your speedo (i had to do that when my lighting went out).... or hell if you have a droid, and i phone, or some other smart phone (and a good data plan) use your phones gps... :D .... or if you have free time, find out your trans gearing, and your rear gearing... calculate a final drive ratio for each gear, and then you can calculate Rpm+gear=speed .... or lol just find a "your speed" roadside speed detector, make a few passes and find out your speed, and gear and rpm... DanielC Posted March 11, 2011 Report Share Posted March 11, 2011 The aluminum cup is attached to the needle. The aluminum cup has a light spring, and the spring wants to go to zero MPH. When the magnet turns, by the speedo cable, it drags the needle higher. the faster it turns, the higher the needle goes. The cup, and magnet are very close inside the speedometer, and if the magnet touches the cup, it drags it around too far, overwhelms the spring, and breaks things. Might be time to to a local "auto recycling yard" or see if the shop in Portland can fix it. Quote Link to comment
