I might have what you need....

Do you need both pieces or just that bottom?... I am using the top, almost as a catch incase something went wrong but I am not using that bottom piece.

I used a carrier bearing from a volvo on mine... had a nice bracket built in to bolt it down...

I need to locate in my garage but I am sure I have it....

Was it originally a two piece shaft? And it was converted to one piece shaft? The part you show in the pic above is for the center support bearing, on a two piece shaft.

 

One piece shaft is fine, as long as it's not hitting anything, like the body, or frame. The angles of the tailshaft vs the pinion shaft need to be within about 3 degrees of each other for a healthy long joint life, but that won't affect the shaft. Unless of course the joint gets so bad that it causes the shaft to contact something, or if the joint fails completely.

 

One other thing that can cause a shaft to break in the middle (and I see this all to often) is if it has been built from two separate shafts and is welded together inside the span of the tubing. It should not be two pieces welded together, but one continuous piece of tubing. Was this shaft put together from two shafts?

 

A good driveline shop can advise you on what is too long. Most shops won't build one that's too long, as it becomes a liability for them.

Stroffgren he still has his 2 piece driveshaft....

 

Hobo I think they are different... at least the rubber part of the carrier bearing are.. the 620 carrier is round while the 521 has a wierd shape.... little wings or something on the bottom.... anti rotation or something... no idea....

It was a one piece from a 520 I grabbed at a pick n pull. I had it balanced before I put it on about 4 years ago. . I kept the 2 piece shaft that comes on 521's. But, going through my storage I can't seem to find the bottom piece.

 

I had just installed 2 degree pinion angle shims to correct the angles not even 500 miles ago.

 

This one piece was not made from 2 shafts. 520's came from the factory with a one piece.

And sky I'm off work in a few hours... I head right home to work on my 521 so while the compressor is builds pressure I'll take a look.... I'll message you one way or anothet

I ran a Z20 5 speed in my 70 521 with a 520 drive shaft for over 250,000 miles with no problems.  Eveven hauled over 1 ton sand loads with it more than once.  Ran it down the freeway at 85 to 90 miles an hour all the time traveling back and forth fro Bagdad AZ to Phoenix AZ.

I agree its a fluke thing. Or pounding gears and got some axle wrap. I am 1 piece aluminum of course custom made with a 280 Z and FJ and no problems all the way up to almost 120 MPH. If it saves you money Mike put the old one in plus it is better for lowered trucks anyway. I just like the fact of no carrier bearing, just one more thing to give problems.

Were you just driving a steady speed, did you slam on the brakes, did you just shift gears?

Did you remove leafs to lower the rear of your truck?

Yea I was driving about 75 steady. No braking. No shifting. Something just broke. I didn't remove any leafs. I used 720 4x4 leafs with 3 inch blocks and 2 degree pinion angle shims.

I will put another one piece back if I can find another 520 one. . Custom might be more than I want to spend. For now I have the 2 piece back in minus the lower carrier bearing bracket just to be able to move then truck around. I'll deal with it after canby.

Ill be at Canby, and I can send the part down with someone to the Datslocos show. That way you can get your truck fixed in time to bring it to Canby :poke:

Maybe you should re-look into the shims you put in, maybe your angles were good without them if you went as long as you said without an issue.

Yea that's what I was thinking. I'm getting the 510 prepped so I'll have to put off the 521 till after canby.
