You sure don't want it locking when you don't want it to. Yes it will run fine with the switch removed. (much safer) Does the key still fit and work?

When I got my 710 the column was punched. All that was left was the switch behind the key cylinder... the one that screws on from the back. Yeah that was good... stall while turning through an intersection. Had to slam in park, find the screwdriver (rolling around on floor) to fit in the switch, grab the switch, fumble fumble, screwdriver in turn crank start, slam in drive... stall... repeat.

If the cylinder and attached switch are loose, unplug and take with you when you park the car.

The steering lock has (or had) breakaway screws so you might need a drill and small drill bits to either drill out the screw, or what I did was just cross-drill a notch in the head so I could get the thing to turn out.

I've had to do that a couple times... someone forced one of mine, so the lock was jammed in the "on" position, and another was a buddy's 310 where the lock was smashed with a screwdriver. You could start it with a screwdriver but sometimes it would fall into lock all by itself while driving... not fun.

I mean, turn the steering wheel and suddenly have the steering lock engage mid-turn. Or, engage when you return to straight and when you want to turn, nothing happens because the wheel is locked.

With punched ignition locks, it's really easy to have happen. The steering lock is the outer part of the housing, the ignition switch itself is just a little piece on the very back where the wires plug in. When the lock cylinder has been punched out or broken out with the screwdriver, the part that engages the steering lock is free to move wherever it wants. Vibration makes it settle into a "locked" position even if the ignition portion doesn't move.

Trust me, you don't want this to happen on the road. I did, though my buddy had it happen first and I knew how to release it quickly.
