speedometer question

Hi guys,

I have a speedo question. I have a 71 510 wagon with a non functioning speedo. I just picked up a 510 speedo cable and it appears to work. I have a late close ratio z 5spd tranny.

my questions are.

A. where can I find the info for what stuff I need to get it to function decently, within 5 or so mph...

B. Where can I find an aftermarket speedo that would work with this tranny/car combo.

Ive never had this issue before and Im still searching but not really finding what Im looking for.

thanks

If the speedometer is working correctly, a specific speedometer cable rpm will indicate 60 MPH. The speedometer cable is driven by the drive shaft, inside the transmission by a pinion gear. There are different pinion gears for different rear axle ratios.

If you still have the original transmission that came with the car, it probably has the right speedometer pinion for your car, that is a good place to start.

You can get a handheld GPS that will show the speed, and you can check the car's speedometer calibration against that.
