New member, 1978 Datsun B210

Recommended Posts

Hello every one, I'm new here and I hope we can share some technical stuff.

I purchased a 1978 Datsun B210 some time ago, and the car runs up and down anywhere, I comute from Redwood City to Berkeley (~ 80miles round trip), and the Car just drives ...

One thing that the Little moder does is that teh Carburator is missbehaving, ,....in the morning starrts just fine, the choke kicks in, and it goes down on RPM once it is warm, iddle is @ 1000RPM, for now, but there is some Evil smell like if is running so rich on Gas!!, I adjusted the Iddle Screw to keep the car going ...and than addjusted the fuel mixture screw..and back an fourt etc....well the Carb still running really Rich,,fumes are just getting me sick by the time I get home,,,,,sometimes,,right in the middle of higway,,,the engine just Die,,and I press the clutch and keep playing with the gas,,and evntually the Mother thing,,will come back to life again,,with out me gething out of the high way...

I read the whole story of the Guy from Petaluma (sorry forgot his nick), and my car wont die at iddle like hes dide, but that smell?? and the engine dieing in the middle of the highway??

I suspect that one of those Selenoids is missbehaving, I shaw a wire just really loose at the selenoid conctor that goes into the carburator??

I understand there is two little selenoids,,one for the Air, and one to cut the Fuel off.

I'm about to remove the whole intake, exhaust manifolds, plug the emission ports, and get me a webber or addapt a carb that has no elecrical bull on it.

sugestions are wellcome.

I'm little frustrated because I bealive that I have a very strong mechanical skills, but for diagnostics ...I'm very poor.

thanks.

excuse my english please, I'm Mexican (from Mexico).

Welcome to Ratsun!

I ALWAYS disconnect the emission crap, but I live in an area where that is ok. Im fairly sure that you have to leave all the stock stuff on your car, and operational in Cali. Im sure that someone more educated on this subject will post here aswell!

And so you know the rules, Pics Or Ban!

And I hope you can understand my typing, Im American (From America) ;)

I would check first and see if the timing is right, before you go purchase a carb. I went through steps before being sure it was my carb on my 1980 210, the steps are check timing and then compression. If you do notice that your wire is loose from the carb i suggest you fix it, not sure what engine you got but my A14 has an anti dieseling silenoid.

Welcome El,

I would have the carburetor rebuilt. I updated my thread this evening regarding my purchase of a newly rebuilt carburetor I ordered from National Carburetors in Florida.

I wouldn't get a Weber because of smog laws. Fix your Hitachi or get a newly rebuilt Hitachi.

Good luck :D

Welcome. I am no super mechanic, but I do have a long history with carbed cars. I would think that you have a couple of different problems.

1) You most likely have a fuel leak (the smell)

2) You are loosing spark or having fuel starvation issues (stalling at speed).

Loss of fuel at speed caused by either weak fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, restriction some where in fuel line. Intermittent spark loss is usually the fault of a coil.

I wouldn't be to worried about timing or compression if the car is running properly most of the time, timing and compression or not intermittent.

Thanks EricsB210.

I found the problem to the fumes smell.

I did a meticulously check to the engine behavior, and found out that my Vaccum advance device in the Distribuitor was shot,,the diagfragm is shot, so I have ordered a Distribuitor with the Vaccum advance and electronic ignition parts on it, I'll install this on saturday, I can waith to drive my little ...(my Family call's it , "Tlacuache", wich means Opossum),,go and figure??some times I feel ofended by that name called to the little Ratt looking B210.

thanks every one, I let you all know on saturday how it works.

Non working vacuum advance will run good when revved up because the centrigugal advance will be 'kicked in'. At low speed there will be a loss of power because the spark is late and the fuel will be burning on the way out the exhaust... thus the smell. Good catch on that. BTW your English is better than many.

Yes, Datzenmike, I didn't went into details about the spark relation with the fuel mixture and the Vacum advance device, but exactly that is what happnes when that little thing diagfragm breaks,,hopefully I'll be breathing clean air again,,ha,ha,ha,,By the way, I put some 6X9" nice (120watts RMS) speakers in the back pannel, and on Saturday I'll be installing the Stereo,,he,he,he,, that car Value is Rai$$ing up,,I got some nice, real nice ROTA 13" alumminum wheels that I purchased so cheap (120.00 for the set like new..down in L.A. just need to get the tires,,may be on Saturday too...he,he,he,,

I'll be taking new pictures soon, I don't really want to paint the Car, I like it the way it is, it looks like a Ratt Road...or Road Ratt,,one of those terms for the Old FORDS..he,he,he.

Asta.
