Nothing to say someone hasn't reoriented the distributor. Did you get it 180 out? #1 on exhaust stroke, not intake stroke? Don't forget those distributors should be at -3 degrees/+3 degrees to operate correctly.

Google helps :D If I remember correctly, some distributors will tell you what plug is what on the cap. Break out your magnifying glass though.

 

 

This diagram is fucked up totally. The cap has intake side and exhaust side wires. Look at or near 9 oclock as viewed from the driver's side fender the #1 intake plug should be closest to the rad, This would be Intake one going counter clockwise they are

This is how the dizzy should look if you are leaning on the driver's fender looking down on it. In the center are two coil wire terminals. The top most one has a square with an In inside it the bottom one has a circle with Ex inside it. The square one is for the intake plugs and just above my finger at 9 o'clock is a square that says I1 (intake one) Down at 4 o'clock is my thumb and just ahead of it is a circle with E1 (exhaust one) in it. The rotor is reallt two rotors in one conducting both intake and exhaust coil outputs. If you look closely there are an inner 4 terminals and an outer 4. Inner are intake, outer are exhaust.

 

If you set to TDC the rotor terminals should be pointing to 9 and 4 o'clock to fire both intake and exhaust #1 plugs.

Basically the rotor would be pointing in the wrong direction compared to where it should if the motor is a tdc on the engine....

Also if it's something your checking it needs to be checked at tdc of compression stroke.... if your not on the compression stroke that will also make it seem off 180

Does that make sense?

Piston number 1 should be at the top, hence TDC at compression stroke, you can see this if you look inside the spark plug hole w a flashlight or feel air when you put your finger and piston comes up, or put a stick and see it when it moves up. Also there's this tdc finder that screws in the #1 spark plug hole and when you turn the crank bolt, it will stop cuz the tdc finder stopped it, then ur diet. Rotor should point to #1 spark plug.

I know this post is old but what does it mean when a distributor is 180 out?

To answer your question specifically, a complete circle consists of 360 degrees, right? The rotor in the distributor, which distributes the spark to each plug (or pair of plugs, in the case of the Z2400) is driven by the camshaft, via a gear. This gear has to be precisely oriented when it is inserted into the hole it rotates in in order to make the correct plug(s) fire at precisely the right time as the pistons go up and down in the cylinders. "180 out" means the distributor drove gear is exactly one half of a rotation out of phase, which means the plugs will fire at the end of the exhaust stroke instead of the end of the compression stroke.
