Datsun Boat

Recommended Posts

Well, as Our boating season draws to an end (the river is just too low to go out in until about March) I thought I would share a few views of Our last trip.........

You can see in these views how low the water is now. Usually this cove it about chest high during the summer. HUSS ! !

Mark and I really improved Our kneeboarding techniques ! Even though it was 20 or so years since I had last done it (and I am 30 or so pounds heavier!!) it all started coming back to Me.

This photo is of Me kneeboarding in about 1986 or so. I personally think the life vest just shrank ! ! The photo this year proves otherwise ! !

I am really going to miss doing it until next year ! !

Just as a reminder.......... If You are ever boating in Our area and You beach Your boat, ALWAYS be on the lookout for Mister Rattly ! ! ! I have seen them out even into November.

This is where Mister Rattly lives. Mark had never seen a rattlesnake in the wild............. so I had to do what any crazy person would do.........taunt Him with a stick so that Mark could hear the sound of His angry rattling ! !  Of coarse I was just in swim trunks and sandals ! !

I do not advise anyone to do this but I have dealt with rattlesnakes for the 35 or so Years that I have lived in the desert. None the less, Mark will never forget that sound and will know to retreat if He ever hears it again.

Also, I wanted to touch briefly on the rear hatch. Am I the only one of Us on here that has one?? The other pictures that I have seen, except the above shot with the green astroturf added, is the only hatch I've seen. I did stop by with it on the way home to the factory that builds My fiberglass. I was picking up some airdams. Nick, the owner, has been into boats for years. He actually bought out and still builds the Skipjack line at His shop besides fiberglass accessories. I asked Him about making a mold for the hatch if any of You guys want one. It would be pricey, but He will do it. I would have to remove somehow the orange Datsun sticker for Him to make a blank from to build a mold, but He can do it. Or, if any of You have a hatch that is damaged but repairable, He can make a mold from it. Anyway, keep this in mind if You want an accurate hatch for Your boat. I don't know what temperature You are running, but Mine was around the 150 mark all weekend in 105 to 114 degree temperature outside with the hatch closed.

I would like the rear hatch shape preserved. I believe mine was fabricated or modded by the previous owner. I have a soft covering, but it is very nice.

Hi Captain Bob your Sundance looks awesome ! Any details on it such as... how long youve owned it..any issues youve had with it etc...

I bought it like 3 years ago. I drove an hour from where I was going to WITC Marine tech school. Bought it at 11pm after a long dinner at Perkins we made it back to Aschan Wisconsin at like 3am. So we dropped the boat in the water and just took the guy who sold it to me at his word that the boat was perfect! We did this ofcourse because we were professionals. So after it started right up it ran out of gas in like 2 seconds... So we gassed it up then drove it around Chequamegon bay until sunrise.

She really ran great for a season, then I replaced the Hitachi Carb with a Webber. I kinda bought a rebuild kit for the Hitachi and just well ummm, I got a Hitachi carb for sale, its in card board box, apart...

The webber kicks serious ass though, much more reliable and powerful feel, yet it seems to burn more fuel at idle, considerably.

I used to say I dont need water, just wet sand to move... but then I finally blocked the water and so the Conqueror Marine exhaust did crack, but was an easy weld to fix it. I now resist the need to go through 8 inches or less water...

The previous owner added a silencer to the exhaust, my boat sounds like a wind up toy!

Running her on Lake Superior, I have had to add and glue down all the screws constantly. I often take it on journeys and need to return even in moderatly wavey conditions. One spring I took off on a balmey 50 degree day to go eat Breakfast Buffet at the Casino, 7 miles away at Red Cliffe, only to have to return into a moderate 2-3 chop... Suprisinly her power and hull are great if you work hard to make sure you surf each wave correctly. But she does get wet, and I have returned white nuckled and cursing myself for not wearing my snowmobile gear.

I also added a 1800 gph bilge pump, being that I run on Lake Superior. I also figure if I run out of gas I can pull the drain plug and the jet of water that shoots out the bilge will drive me home!

And after just a few months boating season begins again ! ! !

As You can see I have done a few things this winter. Mark has helped Me a LOT and now the fenders have been painted, stretched outward to properly cover the tires and get them away from the hull, new LED trailer lights, and polished aluminum diamond plate added to the steps:

You can also see that the seat has been upholstered by Sonia in Bullhead City. The interior is still not finished though. The wheelhouse will be covered in matching material after it is fiberglassed to the floor using new wood. Also, the sides will be done in matching yellow replacing the white pieces that are up front.

Stay tuned ! ! !
