Project Bush:: 1984 Nissan 720 4X4 - - - - Finally back on track.

Thanks again for all the help I received when this project began.

RatSun Rocks!!!

Got most of the rear frame repaired. Now for a front clip/rad mount.

All suggestions appreciated.

Anybody put a deck on a 720? Looking for ideas, photos etc...

Also, anybody tow their Nissan?

What would you suggest for a tow coupler. Dimensions etc...

How do these Nissans trail?

Thanks.

Ground clearance would be the limiting factor, that and tires. The stock 720 4X4 will take a 29" tall tire without clearance issues. They don't have to be 10 1/2" wide, 9 inch with lug tread, something nice and tall will do the job. A 10 or 12" tire will push a lot of mud ahead of it. A narrow tire wades right through it.

Here's my deck.......sacrificed the metal rings from my electric stove to trim the glass.... ;)

The deck was basically 'designed' to transport my dogs here and there....

I eventually dropped the height of it to match the cab (height).

Utilized the stock 4x4 flares.

The 'tailgate' was initially built as a ramp to get my dogs in and out of my boat.....sold the boat and cut it a little shorter to fit the box.

Anywho.....got side tracked

30x9s will fit the stock 4x4.......just a slight rub on the cab with a tight corner and bump.

Just took the 'lid' off today to move some appliances.......noticeable difference on acceleration. :)

The weight of that box is just about twice as stock.....

Hey bud. i trail my 720, thats all i use it for. i have tbars cranked to the max, and run 31x10.5 there is a rub on a hard right, but i think that may just be this rig.

also, i flat tow it. i use a stowmaster bar by road master (picked it up for $40 in nebraska to tow my 04 ram) fabed up a flat metal plat and two 6" extension tubes (it pulled my 8/10" lifted 04 Ram quadcab 4x4 2300mi problem free!)

i got the metal from a metal yard (cost about $12) and had a fab shop weld it for me (cost about $40) so for under a hundred bucks i have a damn strong pull bar (waaaayyy cheaper than a trail IMO, plus i aint gotta worry about parkin it at the trails and someone making off with it!)

anyways, it pulls nice, behind my ram, cant even tell its there, and i had to pull it from deep in the trails when she died on me last weekend, so the bar can pull it through hell and back!

Thanks for the max tire size info Datzen, good to know.

At some point, larger tires would be nice.

Great deck Sealik, looks heavy duty. Bet those pups love it! Is that the ocean?

Any chance you could post a few photos of that hitch JeffreyDale?

I've got to weld something up soon to get the "Nissy" out for trials.

She'll be as light as possible.

Be nice to have a pattern to refer to.

It will be behind a 1/2 ton Dodge.

Thanks all . . .

Thanks for the comment on the deck......it's a little heavy.....but works rather well.

Actually.....I packed 24 foot length 2x12s on it.... .....got some 'interested' looks that day. :o :D

The 'pups' prefer my other 4x4 long bed with a canopy on it.....little more room.

No ocean.....that's Clearwater Lake.....beautiful....pristine.

Had a good crowd that day (tourists) watching me 'herd' my dogs up the ramp......

Worked well at home (dry run).....but at the launching ramp the boat sat a lot higher on the trailer, so the ramp was much steeper.

Strapped the PFD on Ruby....said....'Lets go'.....up the ramp she went....But.....lost her balance for some reason.....down she came to the tarmac. THUD... Good thing she had a life preserver on, could of got hurt.

All of the Germans watching said.....Ohhhhhhh!!!!!.....then....Ahhhhhhh....and clapped.

A 'Kodak' moment.....was rather amusing

Hey Bud,

heres pics of the bar. i just took it off the otherday, but heres what i got:

Flat Stock That Goes to the frame (grade 8 bolts 4 on the truck, four on each mount):

Picture129.jpg

Bar Wih the attached spacers that attach to the flat stock (see the back plate on the exten. with the 4 bolt holes)

Picture128.jpg

I mounted it to the outside frame ext. (where the fog light is now, and there wasnt the horns there)

Picture127.jpg

Couple with the trucks attached (i have bags on the 04 which i need to keep down so there isnt much of an angle for the bar):

I regret throwing the following things away::

-headlamp assemblies

-air cleaner(i had 2 of these!!)

-wiper arms

-horn

-seat belts

******************************************

Had 1 last look around the yard. Found a box containing all items.

Except the air cleaners . . .

******************************************

At first this project was to be "pure" bush, now I'm thinking of using it on the street.

Dam thing runs so good and is FUN to drive. So easy to maneuver and never needs gas lol.

I've always had full size trucks, so this is quite a novelty.

Be nice to have one of those small plate type air cleaners. Any ideas?

I guess it's off to the J/Y today . . .

Time to mount/wire rear lights.

Too bad I threw away the rear box/bumper light harness.

Do Nissans run a ground inside this cable?

Is there a color code to save a little time?

Spare parts to carry in the bush=

Fuel pump is on the top of the list.

Anyone know where to get one at a reasonable price?

Alternator would be nice too . . .

Am I limited to 1984-86 alternators?

Not a lot of Nissans in the JY's around here(built too good I guess).

Thanks

[ Manual Choke ]

Took a short drive last night, coming home Nissy spewing black smoke and

felt like it was running on 2 cyls. 1st time this happened, I thought the

head gasket had blown again. Anyways, dats nuff for this kid . . .

Took the factory choke off, had to snap the housing in half.

Unplugged all the carb wires.

Installed a manual choke this AM. Had the snake part of one lying around

so, fashioned a under dash mount and carb mount. Fairly basic mechanics.

-1c here today, tested choke, works fine. Motor runs way better!

See log below for photos.

What will happen if I cut the wires which used to plug into the carb???

The altinators on my 81 and 84 were the same along with all the clutch parts. But the front end of my 4x4 84 looks different than in the pictures of where jeffery showed of his datsun (81 or earlier i think) I made to brakets to mount on my 84 where the tow hooks were bolted on. Might try to get a few picks of the setup i have to go with my cheap towbar but has not saw much use just to get the truck home when not running after i bought it.

If the gas gauge isn't working then the problem is likely in the dash. If you ground the sender wire at the sender end the gauge end should read full hot.. if not it is likely the gauge. If the gauge works when grounded but not when connected to the sender then the sender is suspect.

I'll be customizing the dash apart soon and will check those leads.

Thanks Mike
