The only ones I can think of are the 38? amp ones from the '78, '79 and '80 620 and 720 trucks. They are small enough to fit and also clear the idler arm. I tried the 50/60 amp ones from the '81 and on 720 but they are much larger around and don't clear.

I am running a 1979 510 IR alt.......... but my whole wiring harness is from the 79 510 too...... ........ in my 70 510

The parts store guy showed me a Mitsubishi IR alt that had the same demensions..... even a similar plug....... I think it was a 60amp or 80amp.......... anyone ever tried a Mitsu alt?

I believe the small 720 alternator (35A internal regulated) is the same diameter as the early 510 one (35A external regulated). Hmmm.. I have one of each but they are in the vehicles outside.

Doesn't the 521 have the larger diameter one to start with?

In that case you got it easy. Nearly every Datsun from 1978 into the mid-80s has the regular size alternator. The smaller one is the rare item.

Hitachi LR160/LR150 internally regulated 50A or 60A

Body: about 129mm diameter

Adjuster bolt: about 6-7/8" from mount bolt. The smaller 35A alternator is about 6-1/8".

Is the Saturn a simple bolt-on? Or do you have to do some mild fabrication? I know, read the sticky. The great thing about the Hitachis are they bolt right on and use the same fan belt. And last twenty years.

At least Nissan is still building cars. Saturn factory has shut down. I was going to visit it when I was in Tennessee in June, I called and they said no visits...

I finally got one today, found it at Pull-A-Part for $15

Yes, it is exactly same dimensions as the early 510 & 521 alternator. Use same fan belt & wiring too (but unplug the external regulator)

And the secret wiring for all LR hitachis including the larger 50A and 60A

Store-bought version of jumper wire ($30)

Two jumper wires?

1. The S terminal should be 12V hot when key is turned to IGN

NOTE: on the B310 & 720, S is hot all the time

either way will work

2. The L terminal (Lamp) should be:

* 0V when key is turned OFF

* 12V (more or less) when key is turnd ON

Because the L terminal is the exciter, if your CHG lamp is burned out, the Hitachi LR won't charge.
