hey guys im new to this forum this is my 1978 datsun 620 i picked it up for 500 bucks. the trucks runs really good body has small dents nothing to bad runs good the only thing that is bad is the tranny not sure if its a 5 speed or 4. the shifter goes into a 5th gear but does not grab, is it shot or is it a 4 speed and the reverse does not work all the time sometimes it goes in and when it does not go in u have to put it gear then go back to reverse so it can work. so i got this new tranny for a decent price it has this number zl71b#2 the guy who sold it to me said its a 5 speed and it would bolt up to my motor with no mods the l20b i compare my original one to the one i got and they have some differences and does not match up with the bolt pattern, the one on the truck says l6. ok so were is this tranny from zl71b#2 and what 5 speed transmition do i need to get for my truck that will bolt on and wont need any mods? any one have one for sale?

The F4W71B 4 speed has a narrow rectangular cover plate with 6 bolts and a small breather cap on top of it just forward of the shifter.

The FS5W71B 5 speed does not:

You want an engine bolt pattern like this one. This is for an L series motor like the one you have. See the casting ridge that runs up the center of the bell housing? Of the two bolt holes at the top the LEFT one is closer. Just remember Left closer is for L series.

This is for a Z series. Note that the closest bolt is on the right. Very different.

The shifter bushings wear out and the slop becomes so bad that the shifter feels like it goes into another gear but not really. You likely have a four speed. The five speed will bolt right in no problems as long as it has the L seroes bolt pattern. Because you don't know exactly what vehicle it came out of keep and use the release bearing housing that is on your four speed. IT is mated to your clutch and must go oon the new transmission. The release bearing housing holds the release bearing and looks like this:

Be sure to press a new bearing on, and be sure to pack it with grease first as they are sold dry and will only last a week without it.

He can, but that means finding the correct transmission to swap from. The 4-speed ones aren't the same. While finding a dead L-series 5-speed may be possible, I have yet to find one that hadn't blown out the journals. It's not just a bellhousing- it's the entire transmission front case. Easier and many times overall cheaper just to get the right trans in the first place, but you have to know what you're looking for.
