Driveshaft question

I'm new here but I have been on the Yahoo site for a long time. It seems kinda dead over there now so someone told me about this site. I was looking for advice on a driveshaft problem. I have a 78 KC, L20B w/5 speed and yesterday the front u-joint came apart going down the road at about 45 mph. I towed it in and hopefully, I can save the front shaft, and just replace the u-joint, but it the yokes may be damaaged and bent beyond repair. Is there a source for a driveshaft (new, used or custom built) that anyone knows about? Also, I removed the front shaft today and the center bearing is in good shape but the yoke is beat up pretty bad. I was able to remove what was left of the u-joint from both yokes, but I couldn't get the short pilot shaft to slide out of the transmission. I thought that this would just slide straight out on a splined shaft. I will be checking my emails and hope to get some feedback. Thanks for any help and advice. I will post an update when I get further along. Dan

Thanks for the good tips and the web site for the shafts and yokes. I was able to install a new u-joint but there was still a bind on the whole drive train and also, I noticed that the rear tranny seal was dripping so I know the seal got wiped out when the shaft came apart. I was able to drive it to the transmission shop (about 2 miles) and they are going to see if they can get the bent yoke out of the transmission and see what all is damaged. I was very lucky to find a 77 KC Datsun here at the local J/Y and pulled a good shaft out of it (50$). I'll post a reply when I know more. Thanks again. Dan

Thanks Fineline and datsunmike for the good info. I found a driveshaft at the local J/Y (77 KC)and was able to use the front shaft to get mine going again yesterday. The tranny was'nt hurt thank goodness! I learned a valuable lesson to take the time to check out those little vibrations before they come to see you! A $15 u-joint would have been a lot cheaper and easier than what I went through. Thanks again. Dan

Did you replace the tranny rear seal, $5? Cheap and easy to do. Pop old one out with a screw driver, start the new one and hammer in with block of wood. Any time shaft is off or tranny out replace.

Datzenmike, Yes I did. I did not have a choice in this case. When the u-joint came apart, it bent the front shaft, the yoke part that slips up into the tranny and wiped out the rear seal also. I was really blessed that I did not tear up more stuff under there. My wife was riding in the passenger seat and she really got "BUZZED" pretty good! I was easing along about 40 mph and got it shut down and in neutral quick but that loose shaft still chewed a couple of small holes under the console and passenger seat! How do you get the pic posted on your signature? I uploaded a pic of "ol Blue" (my 78 KC) and my grandaughter standing beside it but it's not on my posts? I may have to come off the "hall monitor" list first? Thanks, Dan
