Wagon battery relocation

Recommended Posts

I'm working on a 71' 510 goon and am going to relocate the battery but have no idea where to... Any of you wagon guys move the battery and where did you end up putting it? I don't want to just shove it into the open in the cargo area and would like a clean/clever solution. I’ll probably end up using a Odyssey battery

Thanks

Joel

Not many places to put it on the wagon, I was thinking about this just the other day. Maybe, if you have a welder and some motivation. You could be rid of the spare tire jazz under the car, and make your own battery box some how to go under there. It would have to be protected well, as well as water tight + battery secured like anywhere else in the car.

Even if you kept it behind the rear seat in the cargo area, that little battery you have a link to would probably be ok back there. Again, i would make some time of battery box to hide it and keep the cables from being seen...

My buddy & Long time 510 guy (I think it was his first car back in the early 80's) Has been fixing up his gOOn & he got the odyssey battery & put it under the rear seat. He cut out the floor board  & fabbed a box for it. It is a really clean settup. I no I wouldnt be able to cut into my precious gOOn but you cant see it. I will get pics next time im over there.

The setup looks great, but I wonder a few things...

Does the battery vent hydrogen gas like a typical car battery? If so, that is just being harvested under the seat like that with no real ventilation. No need for an explosion...

And, I would worry about an 'overweight' passenger sinking the panel on the bottom of the seat and welding the battery hatch door to the lid. :o

Any way to give a better, non-conductive surface to the underside of the hatch door with some kind of ventilation? A plastic sheet or something? I just cringe when I see metal like that in close proximity to BOTH battery terminals like that....

It's a sealed battery, so no, it doesn't vent. Of course you should only used sealed batteries inside a vehicle cabin/trunk. Judging by the installed picture, I'm pretty sure both terminals sit below the top of the battery, so it would have to be a sharp dimple directly over the positive terminal to cause any problems. It almost looks like there's a clear sheet of plastic glued to the lid as well. Either way, I think you're right that it would be wise to have an insulating layer on the lid/box around the positive terminal(s). Not my install, though.

But they can be moved

yes they can!

so dont be the guy that looks, sees theyre in the way, forgets to move them and ...

Under seat install just cries out for a side terminal battery, not a top terminal one.

& that is how you keep the fattys out of the back seat! ;)

Don't mean to dig up an old topic but I had a question about routing the cables.

I have a small Odyssey battery (size of a head unit) that fits nicely under the passenger seat of my wagon. Even with a passenger it has ample room. Since I'm going to repaint the engine bay in the next few weeks I want to relocate it here. How do you guys get the cables into the interior? I don't want to drill any more holes in the car either, unless absolutely need be. Are you guys running it through the firewall or running the cables under the car?

Also, what gauge wiring are you using?

Here's a pic of my battery in the bay as of now. I really don't need to relocate, but I might as well if I'm going to clean up in here.
