PtheDude
working on getting the 79 L20 into the 74. pulled, pushed lifted and tourqed and got it in. drivers side attached, and the pass side mount is 1/4 to 1/2" above the holes. I tried dropping the engine down on the up facing threaded shafts, but it was easily 1/2" below where the iron attached to the engine needed it to be. one thing to note, the old engine had a bit of a tilt to it, noticable enough that datsunholic noted that it tilted to the pass side. I took the mount off the frame, attached it to the engine and tried getting the 2 12m bolts, but its 1/4-1/2" below. What needs to happen to get these lined up? tranny mount? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Loosen off the driver's side and lift engine slightly on that side and at the same time lower on the pass side. If it just won't go, try making the single holes slightly oval on the up-ward side. All Ls are tilted very slightly to the pass side. (as in his quote below) Quote Link to comment
PtheDude
I did jockey it around some but its seriously off. does the tranny mount need to get attached first? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
His '75 had the engine pretty close to straight up... the air cleaner had a noticeable slope to the driver's side, which indicated a failed rubber mount (it looked fine, though). Did you try using all the '79 engine mounts (the metal brackets and the rubber insulators)? I had a hell of a time getting the 1980 L20B in my '75, but nowadays I bolt one side up (leaving the single stud somewhat loose but with the nut on), and leave the other completely off. Then with it hanging half in I bolt the metal bracket to the block LOOSELY (half threaded) and work the bracket onto the single stud on the rubber mount with a crowbar. Once everything's partway on, tighten the block bolts then drop the hoist and tighten the single nuts on each mount. THEN bolt on the tranny crossmember. Oh, and I always bolt up the passenger side first. It's far easier to get to the driver's side bolts on the block, since they aren't shrouded by the metal bracket. The manifolds, well, yeah they're in the way. Quote Link to comment
