HRH
"We want information...information...information!" "Who are you?" "The new number two." "Who is number one?" "You are number six." "I am not a number, I am a free man." "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA." -Iron Maiden So I searched and searched, but couldn't find a concrete thread devoted to weight. Apparently some of our members are a little conscious of their size? :D Okay, not actually. I thought we should make a thread of 510 weights, paying careful attention to what's been added or removed from the vehicle. That way we can refer back to this thread for that information when we're curious just how much the 510 actually weighs with a VG swap, or 280ZX brakes, etc. Weigh your rig at a certified scale! The dump works for me; they'll let you roll on, get a weight, then go on your merry way without charging you. And their scales are usually accurate to within 20 pounds. For instance, my 510 weighed 2130 pounds with a half tank of gas back when it still had the leaky original L16, and stock everything else. I tried to get it weighed today but the dump was closed, but I suspect it will be heavier now with upgraded brakes and bigger motor/carb assembly, but I'm not sure. So to clarify: Stock 1971 510 four door. L16, 4 speed, stock everything (brakes, diff, trans). Half tank of gas. Full size spare tire in trunk well. Weight: 2130 lbs. Quote Link to comment

yellowdatsun
Not much of a big need for a weight chart, as I would tend to think everyone out there is going to do the upgrades they want regardless of the weight penalty. 99% of all 510's fall between 1900 and 2200 lbs. I think the VG30DETT 510 comes in at close to 2400. People out there, including myself, have weight charts of engines, transmissions, and diffs..........but nobody ever uses the information we already have. Seems the only ones truly concerned about the weight are the actual race cars. Quote Link to comment

HRH
I only remember the TV show, didn't even know they have a movie in the works. Well, shows how not old I am, I thought it was a movie, didn't realize it was a series. As for the weight, they may not be a need for it, but it sure would be handy, I think. Accurate is as accurate does! Plus, it's a lot easier when someone asks "How heavy will a VG swap make my 510?" Then we can refer them to this handy dandy weight thread. Quote Link to comment
BoostinBen
im on the way to the shop we got a set of scales there.. if I get a few min ill throw the 510 on em and post up results. Quote Link to comment
yellowdatsun
Total weight gain on a VG30 swap is less than a hundred pounds. I believe the VG30E is only some 60 pounds heavier than the L engines. Figure probably isn't exact, but the swap adds very little weight. Quote Link to comment
HRH
See, that's my point though. Everyone always says that, but there's no actual weight to back it up. Now if we had a thread identifying VG30DE, DETT, regular E, 5 speed, 4 speed, truck variant, disc brakes, zx hubs, 240 struts, power boosters, skid plates, rack and pinion vs. gearbox, etc., we could all be a little more educated and have some concrete weights down. Regardless, the thread is started, so let's fill it up, huh? :) I'll probably weigh the 510 later this week. It should be heavier than before I think. Quote Link to comment

I believe the VG30E is only some 60 pounds heavier than the L engines. Figure probably isn't exact, but the swap adds very little weight. According to the DQ article on engine swaps, they VG30 engine swap adds 125 pounds. I am sure it is more then that when you add in the additional items needed to complete the swap. Figuring a 510 starts at 2100 pounds I am thinking my VG33 swap will come in at a hefty 2400 pounds. But with ZX brakes, coilovers, rear discs, larger exhaust, sound deadening materials, recaro seats, a stereo system larger wheels and tires, etc. It is to be expected. Quote Link to comment

HRH
Sweet! That's the kind of info we need. What upgrades have you done? Motor/brakes/skidplates/rollbar/etc.? Maybe if I get my alternator swapped out tomorrow, I'll take the 510 up to the dump to weigh her. I don't have the cool corner weight scales. Quote Link to comment

Icehouse
I took my 68 2 door over the truck scale and paid 8 bucks to find out it weighted 2160 with almost a full tank and a small parts supply in the trunk :) Yesterday I spent 9$ to get the Gobstopper 510 weighted, it scaled 2060lbs, which is weird that it weighted less than my other car.... So all I can figure is that the lady that weighted my stocker must have hit the button when I was still in the car. Which would make sense. Subtract 150lbs then it's just a tad less than the turbo car. Which I'm amazed only weighs a hair over 2k! Gobstopper stats: L20 EFI turbo'd with truck 5 speed and eclipse intercooler intank Walbro 15" Panasports sub in trunk with Punch 100 amp (not hooked up yet Dynomat on roof with new headliner all interior except carpet over half tank of fuel Subi diff 2060lbs certified truck scale +/-20lbs with printout 9$ Quote Link to comment
