PL 521 Steering Wheel

Make sure you post some pics of your truck jomama! and welcome. There was a sweet 521 steering wheel on ebay last week. Had the fancier half hoop attached to the horn button. Went for $40 + $20 sh. Man I should have bid on that puppy!

that was me that snagged the 520 steering wheel listed as a 521. i ended up paying $60 for it and it's cracked all to hell. i may fill in the cracks with some black epoxy mix or something. that horn ring is hella hard to find though. i'll be keeping my old as a spare.

 

tdaaj does have one i'm sure. pm him, you may have to bug the hell out of him. i know he has a 510 horn ring that looks super cool. dont know if he has a 510 steering wheel. i wonder if a 510 steering wheel will fit on a 521?

 

i would stick with an original and leave the after markets at the store where they belong. just me though:lol:

I'd love to keep the stock one, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to find one, and I don't plan on keeping the truck completely stock... besides, I think I nice, big 15" wooden wheel with chrome spokes would look pretty slick, don't you?

Congrats! It is a hard thing to find. I wondered about the condition. The seller claimed "This iten is in excellent condition and shows less than average wear. It has no major blemishes and includes the factory emblem in the center."

 

And I wrote to ask about what looked like cracks, and he never replied.

 

Still, even with the cracks, it is killer, and I want one! Do try the black epoxy, and soot some pics so we can see how it works. I know alot of us 521ers have some cracks to fill!

If anyone has a wheel thats too rotten to use, here's an option:

 

Cut everything away:

Make (or have someone make) an adapter ring to bolt to the hub:

And get yourself the wheel of your choice and bolt it up:

Works perfect. Easy to take off and take w/ you if you're sketchy aboot leaving your ride anywhere. That's a 300mm wheel BTW. I haven't yet, nor do I really want, to make a horn button, but its also possible. :)

Good idea... Never really thought of that myself, and it'd probably run about the same (or even cheaper) as getting an adapter (~$30 on this side of the border), but you could likely make the adapter fit any aftermarket (and probably even some stock) wheels... I think I may have to do that myself... I just have to find a destroyed wheel, mine is still somewhat salvagable (albeit a little rotted...)

 

The only issue is, it puts the wheel out an extra couple inches, correct? I'm not a huge guy, but I have quite a bit of reach, and the way my truck's set up ATM makes me feel like it should be a lot bigger than it is... my feet reach the pedals comfortably, but my elbows have to be bent in order to hold the steering wheel. Are there any other options that won't move the wheel out any further from the stock positions, or are there any other Datsun wheels that will fit the 521, with little to no modification?

....in actuality, the wheel sits futher down then stock. Probably by about two inches. :)

 

I haven't done any in-depth searching for hubs, but from what I have hunted, I haven't found any. Sure, the 510 spline fits, but the signal cancel doesn't work w/o modification.

Signal cancellation, pfft... my stock turn signal stalk doesn't work, let alone have cancellation...

 

And just to clarify, does the stock steering wheel bolt up to the hub you have shown above, or is the hub part of the steering wheel?

Nope. The hub is inside the steering wheel. You have to cut everything away from it. This is why it sits further back then the stock wheel.

Er... I'm not trying to argue with you or anything, but I'm just trying to clarify...

 

From what I know, steering wheels have a certain amount of "dish"... I'm not exactly sure how it's measured, but I'll assume it's from the center of the hub to the center of the steering wheel ring... the part that you actually hold... So the distance of the steering wheel from the stalk would be half the hub depth, plus the dish...

 

Now, if you take the stock hub, strip everything off it, mount an adapter to it, and then bolt another steering wheel to it, the distance from the stalk to the new steering wheel would be the depth of the original hub, plus the depth of the adapter, plus the dish of the new wheel... If that's the case, wouldn't the new wheel stick out further than the stock one, if the same dish is used?

 

Again, I'm not trying to argue with you or anything, but I'm just trying to bring up a point that may affect some people who find the stock wheel too close... I'm pretty sure the new wheel could sit further back than the stock one, but only if the right amount of dish is used...

I see your point. Dish does play a factor. It all comes down to what steering wheel you decide you go with. Mine is pretty flat so its an inch further away then stock (i was curious and just meas'd it). Mine is also MUCH smaller then stock, but that's not everyones liking. With 15x8's wrapped in 235's, steering is fun.

Alright, I did a quick search, and realized the 521 adapter topic has been covered at least three times before... People have previously mentioned that the 620 hubs WILL work on a 521, BUT the 620 hub is about 1.5" shorter than the 521, and leaves an ugly gap when bolted to the 521 steering column... I wouldn't mind shortening the column, but I think it'd be just too much of a pain in the ass to try to find a replacement if I ever decided to go back to stock (not that I'd be able to find a wheel)... But, I'm sure there'd be some interest from other people, so I may as well ask... is there any quick and dirty way of shortening a 521 steering column (even just 1.5" to accept a 620 hub) that DOESN'T involve welding? Or, is there another steering column that would bolt in or could be modified to fit that would set the steering wheel back further? Or, one that offers tilt steering? I tried doing a quick search on it but came up with nothing other than the welding method... did I miss something?

has anyone tried a Z factory wheel on a 521? my truck wheel in in great shape but it is little and not much to hold on to.

My Z has a perfect stocker and I have been wanting a Nardi. so if I could put the Z wheel on the 521 than I could justify the cost of the Nardi.

Hmm, I think I read that the Z wheels won't fit on a 620, and since a 620 hub bolts to a 521, they probably won't fit on the 521 either... but, I'm not exactly sure. If you try a search you might find it...

 

Datsunaholic, on the NWDE site:

 

I have a 280Z wheel on my '76 4X4. Fit so well, even the turn signal canceller and horn work as-is, with zero mods to the wheel or column. So I'd assume the kit for a '75-78 280Z would fit a 620 perfectly.

But, that's only for the 620, and as has been mentioned above, the 620 hub is 1.5" inches shorter than the 521... so you'll either have to shorten the column (in order to make the horn/turn signal cancellation work), or fab up a cover behind the steering wheel to cover the gap.

I have 240z Steering wheel on both of my 510 and 521.

It bolts right up but the turn signal and horn contact does not work.

 

Been looking for aftermarket adapter as well that doesn't extend as much towards the driver.

 

Not much room in 521 and I'm not even a big guy.

I can see this being an issue with others.
