A few weber/hitachi questions

I have a '79 stock hitachi carb I'm swapping out for an old weber 32/36 DGEV on an L20b.

 

1) What are the two small lines that run parallel to the fuel lines and enter the hitachi on the side nearest the valve cover? They come from the water pump it seems like, but I find it hard to believe they are for cooling the carb... On the weber, there is one pipe in the same place (also a hole that looks like it was plugged with glue, don't know if something was there before).

 

2) In this diagram, it shows the anti-dieseling solenoid floating in the air. My weber didn't come with one, but the main problem is I can't figure out where it would go. Did older webers not have that option? If this is the case, do I just deal with shut-off dieseling, or is there something else I can do? Btw, how do I find out just how old it is (the guy I bought it from didn't know).

 

3) How do I install the electric choke correctly? Inside the auto choke cover, there is a coil who's end fits over a peg to control the choke (I assume). However, which way and how far, if at all, do I have to rotate the cover after it is fitted on? Also, it doesn't appear to do anything: I hooked the terminals directly up to the battery and nothing happens. Should something?

 

4) Any other pearls of wisdom before I begin?

The 2 lines from the carb are vacuum lines. The line running to the thermal vacuum swicth is for the EGR, the other non-switched one is for the distributor advance.

 

There is a technical way to set the auto choke using time/temperature but I just set it so it's barely closed when cold. Do that by turning it until the choke starts to open, the rotate back to close it fully (but not firmly). To make it open slower, close it more firmly. Yes, it has to be rotated when on. If the clockspring (heater coil) isn't engaged on the choke pull peg, the choke won't move.

 

What it should do is open the choke.

Can't get it to idle. I got the engine warm by physically holding the choke plates closed at a fast idle. It made gurgling sounds and would only stay running if the mixture was super rich. Once is was warm, I set the idle speed screw to 1 turn from touching and the mixture screw all the way out like my directions say. Except now it won't run at all, even roughly. I'm thinking I put something back together wrong, but I don't have any ideas.
