mike
Hey, FNG here. Ive got an 85 720 and Im having trouble pulling the harmonic balancer bolt off. does anybody know if its standard or reverse thread? Or is there a special trick? Ive already pulled the head... and dropped the chain... and probably tweaked the crap out of everything inside by trying to reef on the bolt with the chain dropped... just to change the damn valve guide seals that I could have fixed with rope... Any help would be great. Quote Link to comment
kiznook
Put a good impact wrench on there. Normally I would say "starter trick" but sounds like it's a little late for that :( Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
No special trick. They are factory torqued to almost 120 ft lbs. I use a 1/2 ratchet with 24mm impact wrench socket. I slip a foot long piece of pipe over the end about 6" down and give it a few smacks with a 6 lb mallet. Don't be shy with it. Usually it moves on the second hit. Then i slide the pipe further out for leverage and off she comes by hand. Gently tap the pulley from behind and it works off the end of the crank. In the past year I've taken 2 L20Bs, 2 Z20Es, a Z22, and a Z24 pulley off. If you have an automatic you can't put in 5th and use the E brake to hold the motor. Just take the valve cover off and slip a long socket extension through the opening in the cam sprocket. Use something big, the large screwdriver I used snapped! Sorry, I see the chain is off. Anyway, one of the Z20Es was an auto and I didn't lock it. Hit it hard and fast enough and the inertia of the rotating parts will hold it enough to loosen it. Quote Link to comment
mike
Thanks guys, I got it off. I was trying the BFH and a breaker bar method but it kept pushing the truck into the garage door (5 spd)... I ended up tying the chain up with a piece of wire and using the impact on it again. I figured if I broke something oh well. The chain barely moved this time and the bolt came off in two seconds. Oh yeah, and it is standard thread in case somebody else runs into the same problem. hang_510
i was in the same position saturday, luckily the starter trick worked for me! i couldnt find a 27MM socket, the 1 1/16" worked perfect. unfortunately i should not have been that deep into it either. all i gotta say is... "tensioner" :fu: :fu: :fu: :fu: :fu: Quote Link to comment
Cruzn620
yeah, when you get the tensioner reset i found a great tool to hold the tensioner "in" while putting the motor back together. get a wood hammer handle. i had to modify mine a bit, shortened it so i could pull it out after the cam sprocket was on, but it works like a charm! good luck with that motor! mike
Hang510, Sorry for your misfortune but it kinda makes me feel better to know Im not alone... Has anybody ever tried to put a stop in a stock tensioner and did you have any luck... Nevermind, I just read where somebody else posted up about the same thing in another thread. Im curious to see if anyone can come up with something though. Quote Link to comment
