Internally regulated alternators are easy to wire, one wire goes to the dash light, one goes to a keyed power source on the fuse block, the big output wire goes to the positive side of he battery or the main power lug on the starter, and a ground wire going from the alternator to the frame/body, it's easy and you trash all that stock wiring except the dash light wire and maybe the keyed hot exciter wire, but I made my own one of them for my 521.

Thank you Wayno I beleive that explanation helped him.

Mark and I talked tonight and he is making headway on this wirirng problem and is working on it as time permits.  The truck starts and runs and the lights work. turn signals work front, back, left, and right except the indicators on the dash.  Flashers do not work.  Not sure if heater works.  He has eliminated the cigarrete lighter, the radio, and the dome light as it is a removable hard top.the tail lights are currently powered by a jumper wire on the late model 620 light switch.

I need to compare both light switches and the the wiring diagrams to figure out why the tail lights had to be jumpered to work.  could be as easy as installing the correct early switch.  We will see.  We will concure this wiring be asured.

Ok with Charlies & Waynos help I've almost got the fuse block rewired correctly. The Alternator plug is correctly wired & all wires are sorted & back in the wire loom in the engine bay. My last hurdle is my light switch that's out of a newer 620 & on the back of it...at the time I installed it years ago I had to "jumper" two of the connectors to get the taillights to work. I think at this point if I remove the jumper wire & run a new wire from the Park/Tail fuse to the light switch that may solve the issue of ALL my lights running of the one fuse.

Ok finally a few pics...

The simplified & corrected version of the wiring harness & alternator plug. Fuel return line installed to eliminate vapor locking & heat shield made to attempt to keep the fuel line from getting hot...

New [used] L 18 swapped in..runs very smooth...smokes a little... & i have oil leaking from exhaust port #1 off & on. I have new valve seals [TY Charlie] that should correct that issue. With the fuel return line now installed I had to switch the fuel intake port on the Weber to the other side / make a heat shield...

& the almost done rewired fuse block. A HUGE TY to Charlie for helping me out on this process...

Excellent Mark!!!  Redeye will be happy he has pictures to look at!!!  LOL

I will get out in the garage in the morning and see what I have from Gene on the wiring harness from the 72 620.  I will get what I have boxed up and shipped to you ASAP.

TY Charlie. I think all ill need is the dimmer switch & the ignition switch as a backup.

I got my signals to work by using a new flasher...then after cleaning & greasing the signal switch they stopped working haha.

I also have hazzard lights again & re mounted the fuse block.

I am going to box up everything for the 72 620 and through in a 720 dimmer switch and ship it to you.  This way if you have trouble down the road you should be covered.

Good work on the wiring problems Mark.  You are starting to see how 1 small wiring problem snowballs into more problems.

Allright here we go...again. A few weeks back i replaced the valve seals on #1 cylinder with the head on. Following Charlie's advice i jammed clothesline into the spark plug hole to keep the valves "up" & using a spring compressor i easily swapped out the seals. I still have a bit of oil leaking onto the heat shield i made...i suspect its the valve cover gasket. I took it for a drive last month & all the lights & signals were working just fine...i met some friends for dinner  & came out to go home only to discover that I had NO power going to anything. We towed it home with a tow strap & there shes been sitting. I need to undo the zip ties & wire loom & look for a shorted wire im hoping its not hard to locate. I swear this truck fights me EVERY step of the way !!

Ok long time with no updates. The truck sat all summer due to work being insanely busy & me sleeping 5 hours a day for 4 months.

The issue ended up being a bad fuseable link connection...easy fix to say the least.

Its got current tags again & i drove it to work the other day ...46 mile round trip.

The motor smokes more than i thought it would & is using oil at a not healthy rate but for short cruises it'll be ok for now.

It runs very smooth & still has decent power & the engine temp never got above 170.

I need to readjust the valves & replace the rest of the valve seals & maybe put an additive in the oil to see if thatll cut down on some of the smoke.

& for some reason now  my hood wont latch where it did before...Oh well i can go back to the hood pins if i have too.
