PCD's 74 620 progress/build up

Recommended Posts

Mark do not forget I have a complete rebuilt L20B U67 head with new stock cam and Weber 32-36 on a Canon intake and completely rebuilt 3 speed automatic with new torque converter in my 520.  I might after driving it and breaking it in decide to go KA with a 4 speed automatic.  So this might be an other way to get your 620 going again.

I talked to my brother Garret and he said he would build you a motor for your 620 you pay for parts and machining, labor is free because he likes how you work and help people.

Wow what an offer im blown away by this offer !! Charlie Ill be calling you very soon & TY !!!

Just today i did a mild teardown & degrease on the L 18 i have in the driveway & the clutch looks decent & the block has new freeze plugs along with a few other things i noticed. I just may put the head back on the block & switch over the manifolds & distributor & drop it in & see what the compression looks like. Common sense tells me to rebuild the existing short block but $ is beyond tight & i want to drive my truck not have it sit.

Ok in the last few days Ive been cleaning up the "spare" L 18 getting it ready to swap into the 74. Im painting the block gloss grey & the parts will be purple. I noticed a small bracket on the DS of the block by the timing chain cover that may have been for the air pump or an AC compressor. And i discovered that 3 of the 4 mounting holes on a  Hardbody AC compressor line up with the threaded holes on the block & the pulley lines up with the other 2 pulleys !

TY Charlie that sure does help alot. I may mount the HB A-C compressor so you can see how it lines up with the other pulleys. Although AC in my truck is pointless im intrigued that this part could be used along with other HB parts to add AC to a 620.

Correct both L 18's. The spare motor had the liwer half of the trans exposed which is odd. The head us a W 53 & looks like its never been machined. It had smog runners on the exhaust manifold..ill run the L 16 ex mani on the bad motor. Ill have pix up soon Tinypic has been giving me fits.

I am going to talk to my little brother.  Might be a road trip in the near future!  He has an engine hoist and a trailer.  He is working on building a motor for his Jeep right now.

Dont go out of your way Charlie but IF you guys come out keep me posted. I can unbolt my core support making pulling the engine very easy.

Mark let me know when you have the motor ready to install.  Been really busy with life stuff before surgery.  I got you message but with your work schedule I am afraid to call and wake you up so give me a call when you can.

  • 5 weeks later...

Ok i tore into the existing L 18 last week & discovered a dime size hole in the lower rad. hose caused by rubbing against the Alternator fan / pulley causing the coolant to escape & the temp to climb to 210. I'm running a 280 zx lower hose & lower jacket so it clears the bigger Alternator & I forgot to zip tie the lower rad. hose out of the way. The motor turns over just fine with no extra noises so I'm Taking Charlie's advice & run a compression test followed by draining the oil to check for metal fragments. In a semi perfect world i just blew a head gasket & it's a $150 fix.
