jovial_cynic
Jeff/Icehouse mentioned a while back that the L16 valve covers are shorter than the L18/L20b valve covers. Can anybody confirm this? If it's true, does anybody have an L16 valve cover they don't need? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
I don't think they're any different- the cam towers and chain sprocket are the same size. The difference between the L16 and L20B is the BLOCK, hence the TIMING covers are shorter. Of course, I don't have any of the really, really old ones to compare, just the 1970-on ones. jovial_cynic
That's what I thought... but I'd still like to confirm. Incidentally, I'm not using the stock engine mounts; I'm using a Z-block, and I had the mounts in there that held a NAPS-Z motor in the bay... but that engine sits more upright than the L-series mounts. That's the actual problem. Maybe I should see if anybody has any stock 510 engine mounts. That might be a better solution. Quote Link to comment
Icehouse
I don't remember saying that.... the blocks are different I don't know about the valve covers. Are you sure I wasn't talking about the ka de head? That would make the shortest engine. Hhhmmm how long ago was it I said that? Quote Link to comment
jovial_cynic
haha... well if the source can't confirm it, I guess I'll throw it into the internet rumor pile. :: shrug :: It was a couple of months back, over e-mail. It's possible that I was talking about valve covers, and you heard front-cover, and answered the wrong question... Quote Link to comment
71-521
I had one that I shipped to canada...seemed it was exactly the same size Quote Link to comment
jovial_cynic
Yeah - I think I may have had a communication error with Jeff. Anyhow, I made some custom engine mount brackets to lower the engine in the bay, and that takes care of the problem. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Jovial This is from your favorite buddy: ME I believe they are exactly the same but I do have one cover that is a cunt hair short when No gasket is installed. But then relieved I have 2 cam tower shims on ther and maybe the baffle is hung lower on this valve cover. I have heard people slotting the engin mounts to lower the motor abit if the valve cover is hitting the hood. But never actualy seen this myself Quote Link to comment
hang_510
no diff in cover heights. all L and Z motor combos should clear EXCEPT an LZ24, which requires a lump in the hood. mine has it and the 2 others ive seen also have it. if it doesnt become cliche too soon, im gonna make it the sun in a rising sun scheme. slodat
I slotted my engine mounts to drop my engine down. I know you can do this with a 2.4. There is a guy in Salem with a LZ2.4 in a '68 wagon. You have to look close to even notice. They sectioned the oil pan and re-worked the engine mounts to get it to sit like a stock L16. Quote Link to comment
jovial_cynic
In any event, cutting and welding my own mount brackets solved the problem. No worries here. Nothing a welder and some 1/4" metal can't solve. Quote Link to comment
