Datsun 510 wagon rear shocks......?

Recommended Posts

So I'm ready to finally replace my shocks on the Boso Goon. Here's the issue:

I'm pretty much slammed as far as I'm going to go. That means I have very little travel before my shocks bottom out. I want to get something that has a shorter stroke, is a fairly direct bolt on and has adjustable damping..

I've heard one person mention short stroke Camaro shocks being a pretty much direct replacement, giving the correct travel and available with adjustable damping.

That being said, is this a mod ONLY Sedans can use, or am I able to rock the same upgrade as well?

HELP!!

I think if I'm not mistaken that is for the goon. Not the sedan. Go to the goons check in thread and look at what greengoon did. I think he is even lower than you. And If I remember he even had a p/n in there somewhere.

How did you lower you wagon rear?

If you use block then you only move the diff housing up and the shock mount point are still on same location.

I was looking for the Tokico HP from older camaros or corolla to no avail.

Sean, use the front or rear shocks off of a late 60s early 70s camaro depending on how low you are and how you lowered it one or the other should fall in the stroke range that you need they are available from QA1 with both single and double adjustable. I have non adjustable (but re-valveable) carrera race shocks off of a 928 or 944 porsche on the rear of my wagon I can look and see if there is a part number on the body later today if you want

I have de-arched/stiffened springs as well as blocks. I've been having issues over bigger bumps, and I know it's from the lower springs. I think, though, that the nicer shocks would be a huge upgrade.

What kind of measurements should I take to find out what stroke/PN I should use?

If i remember right "greengoon" is running Gabriel air shocks out back. Not sure of the part # though. This may involve modifying the area under the back set but you can always raise the upper mounts a bit & run a short shock & have more travel than before.

looking in my monroe sensa trac book, I only find two shocks that share the same mounting styles as the goon that are shorter than the stock goon.

5818 11.625 compressed, 68-73 goon, 68/69 camaro rear,3/8 upper stud

5753 10.375 compressed, 68-73 opel gt rear, 3/8 upper stud

5976 10.250 compressed, 79-93 saab 900 front, 10mm upper stud

The camaro front shock that clayton mentioned is a 5804 and is 8.625" compressed and has a cross bar in the lower bushing. You might be able to press the cross bar out though.:D

I know that these numbers are not for the adjustables that you want, but the vehicle applications and dimensions might give you more options.

Thread revival! Let's talk about lowered wagon rear shock options.

There are more than a few of us that have either flipped/de-arched rear springs or the Flex-Form composite springs. This means we need shorter shocks that can handle the higher spring rate.

Right now I have the Flex-Form springs which are in the 200 inch pound range. With the eyes flipped for more low, they give about a 2.5" drop, I think. I also have a 3/4" lowering block in there, but that doesn't effect the shock mounting position. The Monroe #756 air shocks let the ass end bounce all over the place.

I have been hunting for other options. Eye on the bottom, stud on top. I don't think the Excel G will be up to the task.

Monroe 756 Have now

Extended  16.43"

collapsed  10.29"

KYB Excel G 343127   $50/pair - prob not up to the task

Extended  13.58"

Collapsed  8.66"

KYB AGX  743019  $160/pair

Extended  20.2"

Collapsed  12.13"

Monroe 321191 (1974-78 mustang rear) - this shock is shit but length looks good? Other aftermarket options?

Extended  16.5"

Collapsed  10.25"

QA1 505 (single adjustable $380/pair)

Extended  13.5"

Collapsed  9.25"

Bilsteins for 196X-197X VW Beetle fronts

I could not find lengths for these shocks, but It looks like a potential. Anyone know anything? Someone one here mentioned using them on a lowered 210 I think, which runs a H190...

Looking for advice/opinions. Don't want to break the bank but really hate bouncing down the freeway.

Wouldn't the suspension bottom out on the bump stops before the stock shock absorber does? Why would a car maker have the shocks hit first? and if so, why even have bump stops?

If you have lowering blocks, the shock length does not change.

With the Flex form composite springs the shock length needs to be shorter than stock. The small lowering block I have in place doesn't affect shock length, but I felt it was worth mentioning. I also have cut down my bump stops as many others have. At static ride height, my shock length measures about 14.25". I say about because it's difficult to get a precise measurement of the upper mounting point in the car. I have 1.5" of clearance before by bump stops hit. With the angle of the rear shocks, they need to be able to compress about 2", so I need a shock with a compressed length of 12.25" or less. Looks like the AE86 AGX shocks will work for me. Shorter would be better but the price of QA1 shocks is up there.
