A blown voltage regulator will do that. '77 was the last year for the external regulator. I've had it happen on 2 trucks. However, it would go cold once I clutch-killed the engine. But, if the regulator was blown AND the alternator had a blown diode it's do what you see.

Or, if your '77 has an ignition relay it could be shorted or backfed.

I assume the vehicle stays running after you shut off the key?

Then it could be the regulator. The reg is on the side of the passenger fender inner well. should be a square looking canister of some kind. Disconneted the plug then shut off the key switch and see if its dies . If ye then its the regulator thats bad.

otherwise than that get a book to know what it looks like.

Somethings wired backwards. Constant 12V to the Distributor? Is this electronic or points? '77s had points stock, except Cali emissions ones. Points should NEVER have 12V to any point of the dist- it sends a ground signal to the coil and should be directly connected to the (-) post on the coil. I suppose it could have a stray 12V signal if the dist condenser is bad.

If it's Electronic, maybe it's fried.
